From Booklist
From mosaic to gouache to oil on canvas, this latest title in the 13 series introduces budding art lovers to a variety of art techniques—13 of them, to be precise. The section on relief printmaking, for instance, is accompanied by a box listing the tools and materials necessary for creating in this style, as well as well-known printmakers, and examples of woodcuts. Each technique is explained in several paragraphs of user-friendly text, full-color reproductions, and a time line, which runs across the top of each page. Although the time line helpfully places each art style in the context of major world events, it can be hard to follow, cluttered with colored blocks that aren’t always clearly explained. Also, some words in the text marked by an asterisk appear in the concluding glossary, while others do not, often making it unclear what the asterisk indicates. Still, quibbles aside, the reproductions are glorious, and this provides a fine launching point for kids wishing to know more about art technique—or for teachers explaining concepts. Grades 4-8. --Ann Kelley
Review
"The greatest surprises are the time lines for each form of art, artists who practiced that form, full color illustrations, and interesting not or quizzes. (Answers provided, of course!)"
--Houlton Pioneer Times
"A more sophisticated introduction to making all kinds of art."
--The Guardian

Art Techniques from Around the World
By Young Mensan BookParade
Would you like to learn about the history of art? Then 13 Art Techniques Children Should Know is a book for you!
13 Art Techniques Children Should Know is about art techniques from around the world. There are instructions in the book on some of the techniques. For instance, the chapter "Burning the Midnight Oil" shows you how to put oil on the canvas.
The good thing about this book is that it explains the art and has a timeline of when the art was made. It also has interesting facts. For instance, did you know that you can make watercolors from plants? This book tells you how.
Because of the difficulty of the sentences, this book is best for boys and girls ages eight to adult.

Art teacher gives this book an A+
By Jo Mac
Great book to stimulate your child's art appreciation. I bought it for my 6 yr-old grandson whose mom (my daughter) is an Art Teacher. They both enjoyed it especially the art activities suggestions.

Even adults can enjoy this one.
By Tina W. Reynolds
This is a lovely, informative book. Families and homeschoolers would definitely benefit from looking through and discussing each technique before a visit to the art museum! It gives children a fine overview of style and materials used in famous works of art. Even adults will find interesting ideas and facts that they did not know.
I purchased this to give as a gift with an art kit. The book has exceeded my expectations! I have especially loved using the timelines that appear with each technique presented. It is a wonderful way to teach and understand where something is placed in history.
The book is hardbound and nicely made. We do love this book and will use it for some time to come. I also plan to purchase other books in this series.
