Published to coincide with a a major exhibition traveling to Paris, Berlin, and Copenhagen, this book offers enough material to close the sizable bibliographic gap that currently exists. The only real weakness is the uneven quality of the writing, which, as a result of the large number of contributors, can perhaps be forgiven. What libraries get for their money is a well-rounded view of Nordic culture, a complete catalog of artifacts in the exhibit, color illustrations, maps, and fascinating information not found elsewhere. An accessible work that would enhance most collections.

The single best volume on Vikings I have ever read

The perfect book; this is the one and only book that could have ranked higher than Jones' "A History of The Vikings". There are two separate halves to this masterpiece: the first is a compilation of several different authors, each taking on a different aspect of the Vikings: from metalworking to settling to religion, it's all here. The second half is a massive catalogue of Viking artifacts, with tons of pictures and detailed descriptions of swords, pieces of boats, combs, etc.
But in addition to being incredibly well-formatted and informative, this is one of the easiest and most enjoyable books I've ever read. It's written in a way that an expert will get just as much out of it as a beginner, and, being loaded with pictures and text that varies from author to author, it's genuinely difficult to put this book down. You could spend hours just flipping through the catalogue at the end. This is more than just a book: more than any other, this one will take you back in time to the Viking Age. Very very highly recommended.

A Good Primer on Viking History with a great index!

This is a very well-rounded book, giving insights into many facets of Viking life and history. It is well-written and very well organized. The index is a valuable resource for other materials relating to those subjects you would like to read more in depth. I highly recommend it!

About the Author
KATE WILLIAMS manages Upgrade, the Study Advice Service at Oxford Brookes University, UK. She has worked with students from Foundation to PhD level and has written a range of books and materials on study skills. She is the Pocket Study Skills series editor.

EMILY BETHELL completed her interdisciplinary PhD in Biology, Anthropology and Psychology in 2009 and now works as a Senior Lecturer in Primatology and Animal Behaviour at Liverpool John Moores University, UK.
 
JUDITH LAWTON works as an English as an Additional Language adviser and is former Deputy Head of Hounslow EAL Service.  She has undertaken doctoral research in bilingual learner education and has 40 years of experience in teaching and teacher training.
 
CLARE PARFITT-BROWN is a Senior Lecturer in Dance at the University of Chichester, UK.  Her PhD focused on the history of the cancan and led to ongoing research into the cultural histories of popular dance practices.

MARY RICHARDSON completed an ESRC-funded PhD investigating the assessment of Citizenship Education in 2008.  She is now a Senior Lecturer in Education at Froebel College, Roehampton University, UK and continues to develop research in the areas of both assessment and citizenship education.
 
VICTORIA ROWE worked as a piano teacher for many years prior to completing her PhD in 2008.  She is currently a Teaching Associate at the University of Sheffield, UK and also works as a freelance researcher.

About the Author
Leif Melin, PhD, is Professor of Strategy and Organisation and the Hamrin Professor of Family Business Strategy at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS). He is the founding and past Director of  Center for Family Enterprise and Ownership (CeFEO). He has served as Dean and Managing Director for JIBS. He was a founding researcher of the STEP project ( Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices) and has served as member for the Global STEP Project Board. In 2012, he was honored with the International award at the 26th anniversary conference of the Family Firm Institute, and he was also selected as a Family Owned Business Institute Scholar. He is the founder and annual co-chair of the EIASM Family Firm Research Workshop. He has published in international journals and book volumes, including Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies, Strategic Organization, Long Range Planning and Family Business Review.  He serves on the editorial board of several international journals.

Mattias Nordqvist, PhD, is Professor of Business Administration and the Hamrin International Professor of Family Business. He is the Director of Center for Family Enterprise and Ownership (CeFEO) and on the faculty of Department of Entrepreneurship, Strategy, Organization and Leadership (ESOL) at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) in Sweden where he has also served as an Associate Dean. Mattias is a former Co-Director of the Global STEP Project and Visiting Scholar at Babson College, USA, University of Alberta, Canada and Bocconi University, Italy. He was selected as a Family Owned Business Institute Scholar twice; 2007-2008 and 2011-2012 by the Seidman College of Business, Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids in the USA, and won the Family Firm Institute (FFI) Award for Best Unpublished Research Paper twice; 2005 and 2011. Mattias is a recipient of the Young Entrepreneurship Researcher Award 2006 from the Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth. He is a co-founding Associate Editor of Journal of Family Business Strategy.

Pramodita Sharma, Ph.D., is the Sanders Professor for Family Business at the School of Business Administration, University of Vermont. Prior to this appointment, she was the CIBC Distinguished Professor of Family Business at the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University in Montreal. She is a visiting scholar at Babson College where she serves as the Academic Director of the Global Successful Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices (STEP) project. In 2011, she was honored with the prestigious Barbara Hollander award at the 25th anniversary conference of the Family Firm Institute. In addition to two co-authored books, she has published about fifty scholarly articles and book chapters on family business studies. She serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Family Business Review (FBR), is the co-founder of the Family Enterprise Research Conference, and the founding Chair the Annual Global Family Enterprise Case Competition.

Excellent point of reference for family business scholars

This compilation is a highly useful resource for all family business scholars. It brings together a series of authors who provide a quick and at the same time encompassing access to some of the most relevant topics and literature streams in the field. I highly recommend this book to readers who look for a point of reference in family business research and also would like to be surprised by some great ideas for future research.

About the Author
Verna Cook Salomonsky (1890–1978) was one of the first prominent women architects in the United States. She studied at Columbia University's School of Architecture and at the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris. In the 1920s and '30s she designed hundreds of houses in the suburbs of New York City and elsewhere.

I recommend it!

The combination of photos, measured drawings, and brief commentary makes this a great resource for designers and craftspeople. On the down side, the drawings are at weird scales (like 0'-1 3/8" = 1'-0"), so if you want to draft from them, you'll have to get crazy with the photocopier or scanner. The organization could be a little tighter-- there's a stool in the table section--, and the pieces aren't quite in chronological order. Still, the details are clear, and the catalog is fairly good. One hundred and two photos! Over 500 drawings! (I think this includes each view/detail.)
It's a Dover book! You're not going to find this information for less.

Very good reference

This book had information on more pieces than I expected. The styles vary from high-style European pieces to some country American pieces. I'd look at some of the other excellent reviews posted here for additional information on the book.

I see that the cover art has changed. I can't tell for certain, but it may mean that they've released another printing. While the binding of my very old copy is still in great shape. It's good to know that there may be brand new copies available.

Perfect for creating your own copies of the originals

This book is referenced regularly by others, and I could see why easily when I received my copy. The B&W photos provide enough detail that you can scale proportions when necessary and deduce construction techniques that were used. The scaled sections and plan views of the pieces provide the overall dimensions and critical dimensions that you need to get the feeling of the piece correct. I'm building an oxbow chest from it in a college class, and engaged in an argument with my instructor re dimensions of the bracket feet required which weren't fully dimensioned. I did turn out to be correct too, thanks to the quality of the information in this book that was provided - I correctly deduced the missing data. I'm looking forward to building more of the pieces. These books are old, and the binding on my copy was dried and cracked so all of the pages are loose now, take it easy with your copy. The printing itself is in perfect condition.

Inspector Ken Wharfe, MVO, was personal protection officer to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, in charge of round-the-clock security service at home and abroad, from 1987 until 1993. He retired from the Metropolitan Police in 2002, after thirty-five years' service, nearly half of it in royalty protection.

Interesting Comments About Diana's Life

Ken Warfe's book about Diana Princess of Wales was one of the more balanced and interesting accounts that I have read about her life from 1987 through the mid 90's. He was Diana's body guard provided by Scotland Yard and at one point considered himself to be close confidant for Diana in a professional way. His account neither condones or disapproves of her conduct but objecively describes her life at the time. In it, he tells about her affairs with James Hewitt, James Gilbey and Oliver Hoare yet doesn't divulge seamy details that he may have been aware of. He does a fine job of describing what Diana's life was like at that time in the royal family and how her some of her choices were effected by Prince Charles actions, particulary, his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. He doesn't make excuses for Diana's actions some of which are very immature but impartially describes the scene and the people involved. Wharfe doesn't deny that his job was difficult at times. In fact, he is very open about Diana's complex character. He describes a woman who can be very difficult yet fun to be with, manipulating and needy yet extremely caring and selfless, a person obsessed with being in the spotlight yet wanting a "normal" life. I felt that her bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, captured her life for that time period in a well thought out, easy to read and balanced presentation about one of the most fascinating people of this century.

Finally, equilibrium!!!

I just finished reading Ken Wharfe's wonderful account of his time with Princess Diana. I have read over sixty books on the royal family and this, by far, seems to be the most balanced account of Diana. I never had the opportunity to meet her but I knew that she could not have been as 'off balance' as much as has been presented in the past. Catherine Walker mentioned in her book that Diana had a wonderful sense of humor and Ken Wharfe expounds on that to give us examples of what she found funny and how lighthearted she could be at times. I also was not surprised that she could be a handful at times. While the world knows her past, her indescretions and some of her pain, she never let the British public down when it came to representing the royal family. It always amazed me that she could go from being with the most destitute of people, showing her caring for them, and then be at the most extravagant parties looking as though she was comfortable at both ends of the spectrum. One of the most eye-opening parts of the book is the difference of the protection officer from Scotland Yard and the protection offered by the Al Fayed family. It didn't occur to me until I read this that Mr. Wharfe had the opportunity to stop whatever may have come into play if it could possibly affect the safety of the Princess. He could do so directly with her without having to answer to the royal family since he worked for Scotland Yard. The Al Fayed protection team was hampered by the fact that they worked for their boss and I suppose their primary objective was to make all parties happy along with security and trying to keep their jobs all at the same time. It turned out to be a tragic combination. This is a well balanced book on Diana and Charles. It shows all sides and I hope that someday William and Harry will read it and realize that the author had compassion for their mother and father. I truly believe Mr. Wharfe had the best interest of the Princess in mind when he put pen to paper. I do believe she would have been proud.

Perhaps the best of the Diana books

Of the various Diana tell-all books that have come out, this may be the best, with the added advantage that the passage of time gives some historical perspective. Inspector Ken Wharfe was a police officer assigned as 'personal protection officer' to Princess Diana's sons, and later to Diana herself, from 1986 to 1997. He left that post following a nasty argument with Diana over, of all things, whether Diana could park in a no-parking zone when she wanted to buy some CDs.
The book operates on two levels, both as a chronicle of crucial events in Diana's bumpy personal and professional life from a relatively objective angle, as well as insight into how the London police protect the royal family. For most of the book, Wharfe is highly positive about Diana, describing her uncanny knack for relating to the needy, and he is critical of Charles. The author argues that tales of her being psychotic are highly exaggerated. Despite his spirited defense of Diana's mental health, one gets the impression that this was an extremely unstable woman with whom no one could maintain a normal professional or personal relationship. It seems every anecdote involves avoiding her angry outbursts or assuaging her fragile ego.
This perspective on Diana's life was spellbinding, but I was even more fascinated by the insight into how the London police protect the royals. 'Protection officers' are expected to get close on a personal level to their protectees in order to gain their trust - an approach fraught with problems. Wharfe describes engaging in horseplay with Diana's sons, becoming essentially a surrogate father to them and a sort of platonic-husband figure to Diana. Although Wharfe sneers at the US Secret Service, the London police could do worse than to emulate their more emotionally detached approach to personal protection.

Love this book! So much information and fantastic step by step color photos. Highly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in becoming a nail technician. Also, the delivery was crazy fast. Got my book in two days :)

Grammatical Errors

This book is very informative, however, the reason why I gave it a 3 star is because of quite a few grammatical errors. For instance spelled COMPLEMENTARY correct on some pages and in the glossary, but on other pages in the chapter review they spell it COMPLIMENTARY. Also, some words in the glossary are not in alphabetical order. Some of the answers/definitions in the workbook do not match the information given to us in the textbook. However, all in all very informative.
