Profound Ideas by a Deep Thinker + Suggestion on Reading

THE INEVITABLE is not a simple book to read. The author is obviously a "Big Picture" thinker, rather than a detailed, programming type of analyst. The theme of THE INEVITABLE is not so much the mechanism of how technoogy works, but rather, how it has been (and will) impact society.

The subject matter in this book is profound, and can't easily be grasped with just a quick "once over" read. (At least, I certainly could not grasp it that quickly.) In fact, each of the 12 Chapters could actually have been an entire book all alone. This book can be a tough slog, but I hit upon a useful tactic, below.

**SUGGESTION FOR READING**
Read the first page from each of the 12 main chapters. You will get a feel for what Mr. Kelly is suggesting in that chapter. This will give you an outline of where the author is headed, and make reading the full book a lot easier."

Here's one meaty idea: The author quotes an economist at New York University, who suggests that creativity is now more a matter of "remixing" rather than creating truly new things. "Modern technologies are combinations of earlier primitive technologies that have been rearranged and remixed." Plus, we're doing it with less material: "The trend in the past 30 years has been to make better stuff using fewer materials."

The ideas are also a little bit scary. Mr. Kelly suggests that future generations will look back at ours as the first race that "linked themselves together into one very large thing." Well, I'm pretty sure I don't like the sound of that. I don't like the idea of being linked with everybody into a big "thing."

Another scary chapter is the one on "Tracking." I thought at first the author would emphasize loss of privacy--but he's really pointing at something else. There is a huge industry in the simple act of just creating sensors. "We are on our way to manufacturing 54 billion sensors every year by 2020."

So all in all, I thought THE INEVITABLE was a profund read--but also a tough read. Honestly, the ideas are so big, that I will need to mull over them quite a while.

But I still don't like that idea about everybody being connected to a "Big Thing."

The Holos = The Machine + 7 Billion Souls

BUY IT! (How's that for signal to noise?)

This is the REAL DEAL - another magnum opus from Kevin Kelly (KK) - as crucial as his previous work, What Technology Wants. The many endorsements from the likes of Marc Andressen, David Pogue, and Chris Anderson are fully justified (and not just giving the Senior Maverick at WIRED his obeisance.)

KK is fully in sync with all the current developments in cloud computing and AI and reports on these with his usual WIRED clarity. He brings you all the cutting edge tech that's flowing from the entrepreneurs to the VCs in Cambridge and in Silicon Valley (and also in Munich, Seoul, Mumbai, and Shenzhen.)

But, this is no mere recitation of the tens of billions of dollars in AI deals that have pulsed through the Valley recently. He eloquently captures the big picture - he calls it the HOLOS - the combination of internet and web with all those borged human intelligences + all our tech.

Expanding on the early portraits of the Global Mind supplied presciently by H G Wells, Teilhard de Chardin, Vannevar Bush, and Ted Nelson (and more recently by Hans Moravec (Mind Children) Greg Stock (Metaman) and by Ben Goertzel (OpenCog)), KK presents an awe-inspiringly accurate picture of Earth's civilization and its heading.

Kevin lives near the seashore - perhaps it's the ocean's vastness that infuses his spirit with the transcendent perspective of (Stewart Brand's Whole Earthly) Long Now. We too (as Newton also remarked) are as children playing with bright pebbles on the edge of a vast ocean of knowledge (Teilhard's noosphere.)

10**21 transistors in tens of billions of always-on devices. This IS a phase change, something brand new, and it takes a hard-working seer to perceive the forest for the trees.

Here are just a few of the gems that await you: premium AI guaranteed NOT to be conscious (do you really want your self-driving car despondently mulling over its hapless interaction with its mechanic?)

Numbers galore (I love these): the frequency of searches BEFORE the internet: 104 billion searches per year (via 411 and the Yellow Pages (now used by kids on piano benches.)) ... versus, the frequency of search now: 600,000 per second = 600 kHz.

How can Google possibly make a profit? Cost of a search = 0.3 cents (in 2007:) advertising profit per search = 27 cents.

Annual expansion of information = 66% per year = Moore's Law. Requisite global expansion of storage media = 6,000 square meters per second = rate of expansion of nuclear shock wave.

I repeat: this is the REAL DEAL!

In his chapter on "Tracking" KK brings us up to the minute on the Quantified Self movement. With fellow WIRED writer, Gary Wolf, Kevin originated the QS groups in 2007. And he lives it - he's played with and reports on a decade's worth of devices for monitoring all your physio parameters, not to mention every conversation and every visual field (a la Gordon Bell's Total Recall.)

Virtual Reality: you get a whole chapter -(much unseen by me - and I sit 100 meters from Jeremy Bailenson's Stanford VR Lab. (VR? You think your kids are mesmerized by video games now?)

I'm trying to be brief, but - lest you think I'm an unabashed fanboy - some parts of KK's thesis need to be critiqued. (Remember Minority Report (KK helped with the tech) - was that a blissful utopia that any of us would welcome?)

He takes a decidedly optimistic view of the Big Machine - the "holos."

Lead on and we will follow, Oh Holos! ... to a rosy abundant future (a la Ray Kurzweil (Singularity) and Peter Diamandis (Abundance.) Rapture of the Nerds. (I, too, am enraptured, but ...)

Really? Is it so rosy that the middle class is getting crushed by the 1%? (David Brooks gets it right: it's not Obama; it's globalization and the march of cheap tech. That slide into poverty is propelling both Bernie Sanders and The Donald.) While KK and other techies think The Machine will create lots of new jobs to replace the horse and buggy drivers - tell that to the 99%.

Also, look at those millions of lost souls playing video games night and day and mindlessly following inane tweets. (Are we being lulled by our online games and VR into a soporific coma just this side of the morgue?) Is this all really so benign? (Or, are these just the holos's growing pains?)

And how about the biosphere and Earth's non-human inhabitants? Is the Big Machine holistically providing sustenance or is it maniacally abetting the destruction of Earth's ability to sustain life? You decide.

Despite some nagging questions, this work excels in the realms of both tech prophecy and literary virtue. (Like it or not, it's gonna happen.) Highly recommended.

Permission to Dream... Again

"We are marching inexorably toward firmly connecting all humans and all machines into a global matrix." So writes Kevin Kelly on the last page of The Inevitable. No doubt this will have some dialling furiously for Morpheus to deliver a fresh batch of red pills, to save us all. However, Kelly's "inevitable" future need not be so dystopian. The man is a techno-optimist, and his ebullient enthusiasm for the future shines bright on every page. Yet this is no super-geek future, where nerdy young men with coke-stained teeth peer at screens as they wrestle for control of human civilisation. No, there's something here for just about everyone. Sharing and cooperation are central tenets of Kevin Kelly's new age.

What I like about Kevin Kelly is his worldly wisdom. Here is a man in his mid-sixties who still travels and explores new lands, new peoples and new ideas. If ever we need a role-model for lifelong learning, we need look no further.

Kelly outlines twelve domains of the future. None is exhaustively explored, but all are tantalisingly prised open just far enough for the reader to gaze upon the treasures therein. The author invites us to look and to wonder and to dream. He sees technology not as the enemy, but as the key which will free us from baser physical and psychological requirements. Technology beckons us to contemplate the question, "What does it really mean to be human?" For, says Kelly, machines can liberate us from the mundane, setting us free to gaze upon the myriad futures with open hearts and open minds.

If this all sounds "utopian," don't tell Kevin Kelly. He hates that word.

It is undoubtedly true that the world is in need of visionaries who can point us towards desirable and abundant futures. We need permission to dream again. So much of our media and popular discourse is pessimistic. Perhaps we have been too down on ourselves. Kevin Kelly believes so.

I strongly recommend you read The Inevitable. You just might just change your mind about what is to come.

New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina is the setting for this tense novel that blends the drama of the catastrophic storm with magic realism. Twelve-year-old Lanesha’s teenage mother died while giving birth to her, and, because her mother’s wealthy uptown family won’t have anything to do with her, she is raised in the Ninth Ward by loving Mama Ya-Ya, 82, who feels like her “mother and grandmother both.” Born with a caul over her eyes, Lanesha is teased at school, but she is strengthened by her fierce caretaker’s devotion and by a teacher who inspires Lanesha to become an engineer and build bridges. Lanesha also has “second sight,” which includes an ability to see her mother’s ghost. As the storm nears and the call comes for mandatory evacuation, Mama Ya-Ya envisions that she will not survive, but Lanesha escapes the rising water in a small rowboat and even rescues others along the way. The dynamics of the diverse community enrich the survival story, and the contemporary struggle of one brave child humanizes the historic tragedy. Grades 5-8. --Hazel Rochman

What a pleasant surprise!

I actually like this book. I was NOT expecting to like it, at all. The first pages open with a little girl born with a caul, a magical midwife tells her she has second sight, and she sees ghosts.

Groan... Could it get any worse?

In fact, it gets better. MUCH better. I have no reservations about my children reading this book.

Yes, there is a bit of an altar situation with Catholic saints and voodoo gods, and quite a few ghosts. Our family doesn't do ghosts. But it's good fiction, and the religion stuff is no weirder than the religion in "A Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

GREAT pro-school message. Being smart is what helps Lanesha survive the hurricane and flood. GREAT math teacher. GREAT neighbors and adults, and a respectful way of treating others. GREAT vocabulary.

A Gift of Children's Literature!

I just completed Jewell Parker Rhodes' latest book--her first written for young
people. Its Title--Ninth Ward. Its Setting--New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
Its focus--Lanesha, a twelve year old born with a caul covering her head and
face, who is connected to the spiritual world and her Mama Ya Ya. Through a
child's eyes we watch a neighborhood in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans
experience the arrival of Hurricane Katrina, the surge of the Mississippi River as
the levees give way, the destruction of a rich vibrant community made up of
people who have so little, but share what they have with each other. This is a
story of love, courage and strength as the ancestors encourage two young
children to have faith in themselves if they want to survive. Jewell Parker
Rhodes says that she wanted to grow up enough to write her first book for young
people--she has more than made up for making us wait so long by penning this
magnificent story for youngsters and oldsters, one that I will share with many. A
MUST READ.

"How can it be mandatory if I don't have a way to go?"

In a novel for younger readers, Jewel Parker Rhodes tells the story of thirteen-year-old Lanesha, a girl who lives in New Orleans' Ninth Ward pre-Katrina with a grandmotherly lady she calls Mama Ya-Ya. The relationship between elderly woman and child, while not of blood, is one bound in spirit and love. With her roots in the old voodoo ways, Mama Ya-Ya combines a nurturing presence with the wisdom of her years; in fact, it was Mama Ya-Ya who delivered Lanesha when the girl's mother died in childbirth. As well as Mama Ya-Ya, it isn't uncommon for Lanesha to see ghosts, among them her mother, and others who wander the streets of New Orleans, a city with a particularly rich cultural history. As Katrina approaches, Mama Ya-Ya senses something more than a storm, though her weary soul cannot see clearly what is ahead. As the old lady dreams, Lanesha takes over, preparing for the hurricane, boarding windows, preparing food.

There is an almost allegorical sense of the old giving way to the new in this poignant tale, albeit with an uncertain future. An avid student who dreams of building bridges, Lanesha's curiosity is insatiable, but it is her compassion and bravery that will inspire young readers, the spiritual ties between generations and the capacity to entertain the extraordinary. The author clearly loves this city and its wealth of history and stories, however it may have been damaged by Katrina and its shameful aftermath. And she writes with the same fluid grace and turn of phrase that has distinguished her adult novels. Lanesha's world may have changed with Katrina's devastation, but she is truly a child of Mama Ya-Ya's heart, buoyed by her appetite to taste the world and her appreciation of others, real or imagined. Very poor editing for the Kindle version

Someone did a horrible job at converting it into a Kindle version. The text is full of typos and "left overs" from the scan/OCR process (such as headers and page numbers appearing in the middle of the text). And charts and tables are just a mess, really confusing. Really a pity, because the book is an easy and enjoyable read.

This Works, And Isn't Boring

In the first few chapters, Harry Lorayne gets you to memorise 100 peg words - attaching words to numbers 1 to 100 and memorising them.

"What?!" was my reaction when I found out I was supposed to do it. My short-term and long-term memory began declining years ago due to depression and heavy medication. My test and exam results haven't been so good because of these memory problems. I didn't think I could do this 100 peg word stunt.

But don't worry, and try it. Lorayne first teaches you to associate consonant sounds for each digit from 1 to 9, and 0. For example, the sound for #1 is T or D (the letter T has one downstroke). The sound for #2 is N (typewritten n has two downstrokes).

This way, when you later have to memorise the peg word for #12, you know the word starts with a 't' sound and ends with a 'n' or 'd' sound. For example, 'tin'. For #21, the word would start with a 'n' sound and end with a 't' or 'd' sound. For example, 'net'.

So 100 words may be difficult to remember, but the ones Lorayne suggest will not so difficult with this "sound guide". And these 100 words are very important because they play a big part in the later chapters in helping you remember dates, appointments, telephone numbers, addresses etc.

Besides these, Super Power Memory also teaches you how to remember your grocery/to-do list, train your observation, remember speeches, foreign language vocabulary, names and faces, facts about people, how to not be absent-minded, how to amaze your friends with a 400 digit memory feat and how to memorise the Morse Code in 30 minutes.

I've put some of Lorayne's methods to the test and have been successful in keeping names, appointments and grocery lists in my head. I'm very pleased I read this book and forced myself to memorise those 100 peg words.

Excellent memory book

If you have any imagination at all, Harry Lorayne's memory techniques will work for you. His techniques can help you memorize long lists of unrelated items, memorize numbered lists, and come up with systems that will help you memorize nearly anything (speeches, lines for a play, daily schedules, etc.). They work wonders.
A reviewer below said that his systems involve coming up with and memorizing a story. That's not really true. Creating a simple image or short scene in your mind (takes seconds) is more than enough to help you memorize each item in a list. You simply have to link each item to the items before and after it, you don't have to have a long, continuous story. If you have much imagination at all, it's really simple and fast. If you're not a visual person, it may be more difficult.
However, there are two downsides to Lorayne's systems. The first is that most of his books, including this one, are very gimmicky. They have huge promises on the cover (many of which are true) that make them seem too good to be true, and he spends most of his time showing you parlor tricks to impress your friends, so for a serious study of memory techniques or for use in school or an academic setting, you may be better off picking up one of his other books.
The other downside is that his techniques mainly help with short- and mid-term memory. You will have to go over a list or a set of associations in your head many times, often over a period of a few days, before it will become long term memory. However, using his techniques still makes this faster and easier than repetition - repeating something to yourself a couple times a day for a few days until you're sure you have it memorized is much easier than going over it 100+ times.

An important message - may not be appropriate for some children

Truth is sometimes a difficult pill to swallow. This book about forest creatures who are taken away, one species at a time, by the "Terrible Things," teaches a valuable lesson. The white rabbits think it is better not to say anything, so long as it is not their species that is being taken. Ultimately, the white rabbits are also taken. The little white rabbit who has questioned the circumstances of the other forest animals being taken, comes to the realization that he should have done something earlier. But sadly, he realizes at the end of the story that he waited too long and now it is too late to do anything about it.

This book has some valuable messages, but it would definitely not be considered light reading. In the right setting, when a parent, or teacher, is prepared to discuss the topic at great length, this book can go a long way in preparing young minds to make decisions on their own and to question when things don't seem right. It can also be a valuable tool in helping children understand how the atrocities of the holocaust came to be.

A great learning tool, a great teaching tool, as well.

Eve Bunting's terrible things is an allegory for bystanders. It helps children of all ages realize that they have a voice and that they should use that voice. This book is extremely helpful to use in lessons in character building, tolerance, and finally, the Holocaust.

I have used this book to have the children act out the different parts (animals) as a lesson, and I have also used it as a tool for children's literacy. I am a high school teacher, and I use it every year in sociology.

It is very well-written, well illustrated, and beautifully put together. I give it my highest rating and recommend it for "children" of all ages.

Lesson learned....never assume

It's not so much the product itself that I have a problem with. It is more the fact that because this was presented as a 9 book set pack from a "collection" it led me to believe I would be receiving the first 9 books of the series or at least 9 books in chronological order, not the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, then the 8th and 9th, then the 12th, then the 17th and 18th, and lastly the 20th. Now I'm stuck trying to buy separately all the ones that fall in between those.

Earlier editions of this outstanding work dealt mainly with the measurement of physiological events. This Third Edition goes much further, not only revising the first two editions by presenting new applications of basic principles and a broader overall perspective, but also by including coverage of the latest therapeutic and rehabilitative devices. Four new chapters have been added dealing with stimulation and stimulators (Chapter 10), radiant-energy devices (Chapter 13), ventilators (Chapter 14), and anesthesia (Chapter 15). Chapter 10 covers the principles of excitation, monopolar and bipolar stimulation, and describes various output circuits such as constant-voltage, constant-current, and isolated-output. Numerous examples are presented, including cardiac pacing, ventricular defibrillation, and functional electrical stimulation. About the Author
About the authors L. A. Geddes is the Showalter Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering and Director of the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center at Purdue University. Born in Scotland and educated in Canada, Dr. Geddes has documented research in electromyography, cardiac output, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ventricular defibrillation, blood pressure, and stimulating and recording electrodes. Along with his colleagues, Dr. Geddes developed several new techniques for teaching in medical education and has written six books and over 600 scientific papers. He is a member of the IEEE (Fellow), the American College of Cardiology (Fellow), and the Australasian College of Physical Scientists in Medicine (Fellow). He serves as consultant to numerous scientific journals and to the NIH, FDA, and NSF Dr. Geddes is listed in Who's Who, Leaders in the Southwest, American Men of Science, and The Royal Blue Book. He earned his PhD in physiology at Baylor University College of Medicine, and his bachelor's and master's degrees and DSc Honoris Causa at McGill University. LEE E. BAKER received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Kansas, the M.S. in electrical engineering from Rice Institute, and the PhD in physiology from Baylor College of Medicine. He is the Robert L. Parker Sr. Centennial Professor in Engineering and Director of the Biomedical Engineering Program at the University of Texas at Austin.

I am working for pacemaker company as research scientist and this book teaches many facets of medical device application. This book is almost "bible" for me seeking new ideas based on firm theory and application. I peruse a lot in work place as well as home and it is worthwhile to invest in this book.
