Launch: Using Design Thinking to Boost Creativity and Bring Out the Maker in Every Student, by John Spencer, A J Juliani

Something happens in students when they define themselves as makers and inventors and creators. They discover powerful skills-problem-solving, critical thinking, and imagination-that will help them shape the world's future ... our future.
If that's true, why isn't creativity a priority in more schools today?
Educators John Spencer and A.J. Juliani know firsthand the challenges teachers face every day: School can be busy. Materials can be scarce. The creative process can seem confusing. Curriculum requirements can feel limiting. Those challenges too often bully creativity, pushing it to the side as an "enrichment activity" that gets put off or squeezed into the tiniest time block. We can do better. We must do better if we're going to prepare students for their future.
LAUNCH: Using Design Thinking to Boost Creativity and Bring Out the Maker in Every Student provides a process that can be incorporated into every class at every grade level ... even if you don't consider yourself a "creative teacher."
In LAUNCH, teachers will discover practical strategies for using design thinking in the classroom to engage, inspire, and empower students. Here are a few key takeaways:

  • Student projects that focus on making, designing, and creating
  • Fixing the brainstorming process
  • Structuring project-based learning to unleash creativity
  • Building creative confidence in the classroom
  • Leading a maker movement without spending a lot of money

Required reading for any teacher
By Stephanie Filardo
You won't like this book, you will love it. Once you begin this book your pedagogy will be completely changed. You won't go back to the way you were teaching before. Not because you aren't be able to, but because you won't want to.

I am a personal fan of the resources, personal stories, and doodles. I found myself wanting to highlight and doodle along the way to capture my journey, but also share with others. A must read for every teacher. This book doesn't leave you asking "now what?" It delivers solutions you can use tomorrow.

Your Students Will Thank You for Reading This
By Krissy Venosdale
I believe Launch is the book education has been waiting for. Every single person in education has times when they feel they are not creative. This book is about breaking through the barriers and building ways to bring out creativity, rather than just relying on having it or not. With the maker movement becoming all the buzz in education, this book should be required reading because the framework ensures that you'll not just be "making a mess" but instead providing students the ultimate learning process and experience... and encouraging them to change the world. Not only does this book clearly lay out HOW to make it all happen, but it weaves in practical advice how to make it happen even WITH all of the other requirements we have in education. A great read and a great book to help you think about the right kind of learning in your classroom. Your future students will be glad you read it.

... an end of the year design project from this amazing book had my students BEGGING for more time to ...
By Melissamcc
Teacher JOY!

Students begging to be given MORE time to work on a project during the last week of school. This was our classroom reality due entirely to my year of being brave AND this book, LAUNCH . One week after getting the book and one of the authors, Juliani, generously giving me the videos that most have to pay for, I went for it!

Closed set of boxes at the front of class with a sign that stated, DO NOT OPEN, was the first step - my idea to get the students energerized to keep on learning and growing to the very last moment. It was out for a day and the students were chomping at the bit. On Day 1 we completed the first four steps and got started on the fifth part of the LAUNCH cycle.

Each student got a packet and then we watched the Super Hero City video - the Look, Listen, and Learn part of the cycle. The Seat Selector (yes, that is one of our classroom jobs I got from Learn Like a Pirate by Paul Solarz (#LearnLAP). There were oohhs and ahhs during the video and then hands shot up because their imagination engine had been ignited. Next came the Ask Tons of Questions phase - there were a ton and usually my answer was, "It's your Super Hero City, you decide." As predicted the students were anxious to begin building, but first each individually begin thinking about their Super Hero City - what was it going to look like, who were their super heroes, what were their powers, who were their arch-enemy. I always use a timer because it builds in focus.

Then they shared their ideas as a group with one person facilitating the discussion, so that all got an opportunity (Another wonderful idea from #LearnLAP). EVERYONE shared, trust me, this project is a sure-fire winner in student engagement. At this time they were fluctuating between the Understanding the Process and Navigating Ideas.

Now is was time to open the box to actually begin see how they would use the materials - it was time for Create a Prototype ON PAPER, though most started to see how they could manipulate the materials. What I loved about this phase is that the students all were contributing to the creation, there was so much collaborative discussion - asking questions of one another, when a solution couldn't be reached than Rock-Paper-Scissoring, but most importantly they were respectful of each others' opinion and knew that a consensus had to be reached within the group. During this time, I looked over each prototype - asked the purpose of the buildings, name of the city, kinds of super heroes - really just checking in.

Day 2 was all about using their materials and actually Creating a Prototype of their Super Hero City and at the end an individual and then a group reflection - the Highlight and Fix part of the cycle. Of everything that is awesome in this kind of teaching, it is the reflection that the students found the most beneficial. The many design failures causes the students to focus on what was working while fixing what wasn't working, YET. Some ideas were scrapped, but most were revised with lots of additions.

Day 3 was the last day of creation. Some finished early and designed super heroes, others discussed their super heroes and/or villians' personas and abilities/weaknesses.

Day 4 was the Launch to an Audience phase - due to time constraints it was an in class presentation. I created a rubric of what they needed to review in their presentation and ensured that all would be speaking about at least one phase of the project.

At the conclusion of the presentation, each student completed a self-evaluation reflection and then we discussed a a class what worked, what had to be worked through, the value they found in this project (all wanted to know why we hadn't done something like this before), the problems that had to be worked through in all aspects and a few even mentioned that they were glad that they had had to practice collaborative discourse throughout the year. ALL mentioned the need for PATIENCE.

Though I'm moving up to middle school and will be teaching Social Studies, I plan on using this design thinking methodology when my students are creating projects. The most powerful take-away of this book, LAUNCH by John Spencer and A.J. Juliani was the built in reflection piece throughout the design-thinking phases.

God, Doctor Buzzard, and the Bolito Man: A Saltwater Geechee Talks about Life on Sapelo Island, by Christena Bledsoe, Cornelia Walker Bail

In this beautiful cultural memoir, Sapelo Island native Cornelia Walker Bailey tells the fascinating history of her remarkable and threatened Georgia homeland. Off the coast of Georgia, a small close-knit community of African Americans traces their lineage to enslaved West Africans. Living on a barrier island in almost total isolation, the people of Sapelo have been able to do what most others could not: They have preserved many of the folkways of their forebears in West Africa, believing in "signs and spirits and all kinds of magic."

Cornelia Walker Bailey, a direct descendant of Bilali, the most famous and powerful enslaved African to inhabit the island, is the keeper of cultural secrets and the sage of Sapelo. In words that are poetic and straight to the point, she tells the story of her Sapelo--including the Geechee belief in the equal power of God, "Dr. Buzzard" (voodoo), and the "Bolito Man" (luck).

But her tale is not without peril, for the old folkways are quickly slipping away. The elders are dying, the young must leave the island to go to school and to find work, and the community's ability to live on the land is in jeopardy. The State of Georgia owns nine-tenths of the land and the pressure on the inhabitants is ever-increasing.
Cornelia Walker Bailey is determined to save the community, but time will tell whether the people of Sapelo will be able to retain the land, and the treasured culture which their forebears bestowed upon them more than two hundred years ago.

Amazon.com Review
It has been said that the Africans who were brought to the United States as slaves were completely stripped of their native culture. But pioneering scholars such as anthropologist Melville Herskovits have disproved this in academia, while the literature of Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison has also debunked this persistent myth. Living proof of that fact is Sapelo Island, a South Sea island off the coast of Savannah, Georgia, where West African traditions persist despite considerable odds. This vivid memoir by Cornelia Walker Bailey, a lecturer and tour guide on Sapelo Island, transports the reader to this enchanted land of miracles and magic.

Walker is a self-described "Geechee," a descendant of Islamic African slaves taken from modern-day Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Liberia (she traces her family lineage on the island back to 1803). In God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man, the author brings alive a land where black people speak an African-based Creole language, believe in "mojo" (the American equivalent of Haitian voodoo), and who work to keep their culture alive. "You can think of the Africans as being victims, and in a sense they were" she writes. "But they were also great survivors. If they survived the Middle Passage, and a lot of people didn't, then they survived everything thrown at them. They were determined people." Thanks in large part to Bailey, this determination lives on. But her book, which recalls life on Sapelo Island from the 1940s and rings with the same ebullient language found in Jean Toomer's Cane, also serves as a warning, noting that outside business interests and the disinterest of the youth threaten the very existence of their ancient ways. "We need to be proud of our ancestors from slavery days and of our old people who went through modern hardships and to learn from them that if you believe in something, strength comes from that." With this book, she hopes to pass some of that strength on. --Eugene Holley Jr.

From Publishers Weekly
In a delightful, sincere memoir, born storyteller Bailey reveals the shadows of a little-known culture that is increasingly threatened by encroaching developers. Her tiny community of "salt water geechees" on Sapelo Island, off the Georgia coast, consists of the survivors of slave families who believe in the power of God, the "root doctor" and the numbers runner, hence the title. Bailey's own family is directly descended from the African Muslim, Bilali (or Bul-Allah), who founded their community. Many of their traditions can be traced to Africa, as Bailey discovered when she traveled there as an adult. Entertaining and mystifying, her reflections on growing up geechee evidence a healthy respect for the supernatural: on Sapelo, the living are seen to coexist with the spirits of the dead; a curse could lead a person to ruin; and every dream is significant. Bailey herself "died" as a child; her coffin was later used to store her mother's linens when she inexplicably recovered. Bailey's most terrifying reflections, however, concentrate upon the days of slavery and the Jim Crow culture that replaced it. In the decades that followed, Bailey's own father was cheated out of the family homestead by a henchman of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds, according to the author. One indelible image is that of her father reknotting his net, as the family sits at the hearth to watch, before he goes night fishing to feed them. In writing that is both unadorned and poetic, Bailey's soft Southern wit shines through, resonating with humor and charm. Readers enthralled by anthropology and African-American life will not want to put this book down. (Sept.)

From Library Journal
With a population under 75 individuals, Sapelo Island has received excellent attention recently as a bastion of African American culture. As a descendant of former slaves who originally populated the island, Bailey gives an extremely personal view of Geechee/Gullah culture, which intertwines remnants of West African belief systems with coastal Georgian influences. Her prose style (with the assistance of author Bledsoe) makes for a memorable read as she explains the intricate relationship between God, "Dr. Buzzard" (voodoo), and the "Bolito Man" (luck) as they clash with modern ways that have lead to the rapid disintegration of this once vibrant community. Bailey's new work is highly recommended as a companion volume to historian William McFeely's "outsider" text, Sapelo's People (LJ 5/1/94) and Julie Dash's film Daughters of the Dust (1991), which also treats the Sea Islands.DAnthony J. Spellbinding in more ways than one.
By A Customer
This book is spellbinding in more ways than one. In this modern era of homogenized mass-market culture, it's refreshing to learn that there are still people in this country who are different and who are rich in ways that have nothing to do with money. It may have taken Cornelia Bailey half her life to discover that she was to be the storyteller of her people, but she's made up for lost time - she seems born to it, as well as being a living encyclopedia of the history and lore of one of the truly unique places and truly distinctive cultures in America. At times her words ring with a cadence and spirituality of a faraway time and setting, but neither are so remote as they first seem. Only All God's Dangers, the National Book Award winning oral history of Alabama sharecropper Nate Shaw, compares in its reduction to writing of the voice of an African-American community and way of life, but the similarity stops there. The map at the front of the book shows her home, Sapelo Island, to be at best only fifteen miles long, but it was (and still is in many respects) a whole universe to its people, and two centuries of isolation led to the development of a culture and language that is more closely tied to Africa than any other in the United States. Through all those years, thanks to their storyteller, we know that the "Saltwater Geechees" made for themselves a fascinating world with one foot on solid ground and the other deep in mysticism. The book is also first-rate social history. The story of Sapelo and its people may be a microcosm of the struggle of African-American people to cope with the ordeal of slavery and the outrages of the Jim Crow era, but it has the added turn of their being subjected to the machinations of Twentieth Century tycoons with dreams of creating feudal baronies on their secluded island. It was a war that has had more than a few casualties, and one that is far from over, with the nabobs being replaced by bureaucrats in khaki shirts and green pants, but you get the feeling that, with people like Cornelia Bailey manning the gates, the Geechees left on Sapelo will see the latest edition of "buckra" off the island like all who came and went before. Along the journey upon which she takes us we discover the beauty, mystery, and tragedy of a place and people that few ever heard of and none will soon forget. But as sobering as much of that trip is, we also get to laugh. A lot. It's clear that Ms. Bailey had a twinkle in her eye and enjoyed relating these tales almost as much as I enjoyed reading them.

Part memoir, part cultural history, part plea on behalf of a fragile culture, God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man is as affecting as the best magic realism. You do not simply read it, you savor it and absorb it into your very soul.
In the book, Cornelia Bailey, resident griot of Sapelo Island off the Georgia coast, spins the story of her growing up in that place and in a time when lives were governed equally by religion, magic, and chance. She admits us deep into the culture of her proud people and introduces us to folkways strong enough to have survived the Middle Passage and the centuries since. So it is with infinite sadness we learn that the forces of progress are rendering these same folkways as fragile as a paper-thin fig shell that washes onto the beach.
It goes without saying that God, Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man will appeal to cultural historians, anthropologists, naturalists, and environmentalists. The book's strongest appeal, however, will be to lovers of lyrical prose -- and to anyone who delights in the sheer magic of the way words fall on the ear and follow one another on a page.
This is a special book, one that should find a home on every reader's short shelf of well-thumbed volumes that are read and referenced time and again.

Bailey touches the heart with her personal memior
By A Customer
God , Dr. Buzzard, and the Bolito Man carries the reader off into the world where knowing one's history, listening to folktales, and sharing a sense of humor are key to a child's up-bringing on the tiny yet proud Sea Island of Sapelo Island, GA. Cornelia Bailey's voice as a native and oral historian of one of Georgia's Sea Islands is both descriptive and informative for the adult and novice reader. As a young girl Cornelia grasps what it means to be young, old, or an outsider of the U.S. "mainland". She sees firsthand how the elders in her community, often in the midst of confrontation, overcome economic barriers and obstacles. Many hold on to their land after the destruction of the Civil War, but more importantly they hold on to a sense of pride, due to the customs, beliefs, and traditions thier forefathers brought over on the slave ships off the coast of West Africa. Cornelia shares the secrets of her surroundings among family and friends in this heartwarming memior of the Sapelo Island community.
I highly recommend this book to those who know little about American and African-American history,to historians, and also to those who are a fan of the Bre'r Rabbit folktales.

Great - but needs the book to be really effective
By Indigo J.
Full disclosure - I have not actually done the entire workbook. That said, I've read the book and think that the workbook does not stand up well enough on its own. For example, the first step- day 1 - is to write down all the reasons you want to lose weight and to read that list at least twice a day. In the book she explains that you not only have to read the list, but you also have to ask yourself if that particular reason is important to you. She says this will stop you from just unconsciously reading the list and make you really incorporate it into your thought process. In the workbook, she doesn't get that detailed, and skips the whole thing about asking yourself if it is important. I like the convenience of having the workbook, but get the book as well. I do however think that if you actually do follow the program and incorporate all the steps you will definitely lose weight.

Finally!
By Mollie D. Young
Finally something that works for this obsessed food addict!

I have read every diet/compulsive eating/obsessive eating/overeating/binge eating, etc book on the market & I have tried every diet out there. Nothing works. Some things work initially but then my old demons come back & ruin all my work. I have undergone hypnosis & had counseling & taken prescriptions but nothing ever worked long term.

Well this book really teaches you how to stop those self-sabotaging thoughts, ways, actions. It really does teach you to think like a thin person does. I never understood someone that could actually throw food away or not eat dessert if it was in front of them.

It is initially a good amount of work but far less than most binge eating books, etc. But you really have to do all the steps to break free. You won't need to do them forever & this is only a 6 week program. By the end of the 6 weeks you realize which tools you really need to use forever. But isn't being thin & healthy worth it? I think so.

The book is very clear about eating disorders. If you have one this book isn't for you.

And everything I ever read said you can't lose weight or stop eating until you peel back all the layers of you messed up life or childhood & I have to say it's not true this book gives you an alternative!

For the first time in I would say 10 years I see the light at the end of the tunnel & I can actually say no to overeating.

This book basically helps any diet work great.

Great Workbook
By Avidreader
I have been following the Beck Diet solution using the original book. The workbook is a nice addition to the book, but basically is the same information as the original text with the exception of places to write your reflections. I think I'd stick to the original book, and just reflect in a journal. I love the content of The Beck Diet Solution. It approaches weight management from a common sense 'think positive' approach, giving a series of steps to take to gain control of your eating. It's made a big difference for me.

Evan the Virgin Reindeer & His Sexy Buck (Willy the Kinky Elf & His Bad-Ass Reindeer Book 2), by Candi Kay

From the world of Willy the Kinky Elf & His Bad-Ass Reindeer -

The North Pole isn't exactly as it appears in fairy tales. It has the elves and Santa and his reindeer, but Santa and Mrs.Claus aren't the jolly couple the world believes them to be. Far from it, actually. The reindeer are all shape-shifters who transform into gorgeous beings in human form and are respected by all.

Reindeer Evan is brand new to Santa's sleigh. When two reindeer are fired for voicing objections over the Chief Reindeer's elf, Evan is offered a chance to fulfill his lifelong dream and make his parents proud. Unfortunately his sworn enemy is hired at the same time. When the bullying reindeer takes things too far, Reindeer Derek swoops in and saves Evan from certain death. It's embarrassing enough for the rookie to have to be rescued, but he's also still a virgin. Being a virgin reindeer at twenty-one is unheard of in the North Pole, but Derek is more than eager to help him with that particular problem.

When things take a violent turn for both the elves and the reindeer, everyone must work together in hopes of saving Christmas. In the midst of it all, two reindeer might just find love along the way.

Tongue-In-Cheek Christmas Fun and Romance.
By Kazza - On Top Down Under Book Reviews
A few threads run through “Evan.” Someone is trying to hurt/bump off poor Evan. There's the romance of Evan and Derek, the Vice Chief to Randy the Reindeer. And someone is trashing the elf workshop and also causing grief in the reindeer house. In a situation not unlike a lot of Christmas Santa stories, someone is making a mess before the Christmas Eve/Day flight. Toys have been wrecked and the workshop is chaos. There are only eight days left to make up for months of elf diligence. Can it be done? Can children have their toys? You know it’s going to be tough but, hey… Christmas novella.

There’s also some politics going on, Mrs Claus hasn’t recovered from Randy choosing Willy, over her, and the fraternisation of a reindeer with an elf last year. The Claus’ have cracked down everywhere. Santa doesn’t forget his wife’s philandering ways and now the hot reindeer can’t shift in the main village, they may be gay but you can’t take enough precautions as far as Santa’s concerned. This causes clothing issues – nothing like clothing up your crack after a shift. Nothing like having to keep it in your pants when you want to hang free.

There is the burgeoning relationship between Evan and Derek. Derek knowing that Evan is his mate and Evan having to come around to that fact. It is quite sweet.

He rubs his thumb across my lower lip.
“Second thoughts?”
My eyes widen. “What? No. I’m just thinking about how right this feels. I don’t understand it, but I just know I’m meant to be right here, right now, with you.”

In a world that has seemingly gone to heck in a hand basket lately, “Evan” was kick-back-leave-my-slippers-on-and-drink-'peppermint-whiskey' fun reading. This is a tongue-firmly-in-cheek series meant to make you smile and have a good time with shifter romance, and some sexy times, nice world building around the real North Pole – it’s full of politics and back stabbing, who knew? Mind you, anyone as jolly as the Santa they try to sell us has to have problems. Just sayin’… And there’s a bit of a mayhem. I really enjoyed my time spent with Evan and his uber-possessive mate, Derek – and it has 'mine' in it, multiple times “So… damn… good…” he moans again and again. “Mine… only mine….” Ahhh… And there’s the occasional reindeer growl to be heard when Willy and Randy are there, so I’m a happy reader. I do like a possessive shifter. And his sweet reindeer? Yeah, it’s all right by me. Okay! Bring on next year’s instalment.

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
From New York Times Bestseller, Corinne Michaels, comes a new friends to lovers standalone romance.

There's no way I'll fall for Wyatt Hennington.

He can keep his Southern drawl, irresistible smile, and those pick-up lines all to himself. I made the mistake of sleeping with him not once, but twice. I'm not stupid enough to give him round three, especially after he left me in the middle of the night so I could see myself out. I vow to return to Philadelphia and forget him.

It proves easier said than done.

When the doctor informs me I'm the winner of door prize number two, I put my life on hold and head back to Bell Buckle. Three months and if we can't make this work, I'm gone.

The problem is--when the cards are stacked against us, and I can't bring myself to leave him, I'll finally know if he truly loves me or if all my fears were real . . .

Why, yes, I do want Wyatt
By Vox Libris
Go ahead and try to not fall for Wyatt Hennington.

Just the fact that you would fool yourself into thinking that you are immune to him is so dang cute. There is no way - NO WAY, faithful readers - that you will resist him.

The youngest Hennington brother, Wyatt spent years (somewhat) pining for Presley, who loved his older brother Zach. Not one to wallow in unrequited want, Wyatt made sure he soothed his (somewhat) broken heart by making himself at home between the thighs of the available ladies of Bell Buckle, Tennessee. He knew he was always looking for something, though, even if he wasn't sure what that "something" actually was.

Two years ago, when Presley returned to Bell Buckle, her best friend Angie came from Philadelphia for a visit. (While it is not necessary to have not read Say You'll Stay, which is focused on Zach and Presley, you really should because it's a beautiful second-chance love story.) Wyatt was attracted to Angie, and they shared a hot night together. She returned for another visit, and she and Wyatt again rocked that headboard.

It isn't that Angie was left heartbroken when Wyatt left her in the morning to go to work; it's more that she was left disappointed. She liked him, and she thought they had a good time. But waking up to an empty bed made her feel discarded. A month later, she feels something else entirely, and she has to go discuss this with Wyatt.

Her third trip to Bell Buckle undoubtedly will muddle up Angie's carefully constructed world. She has her job as co-owner and business manager of a successful Philly bakery, and she likes her single-ness. She's made peace with being alone and having the occasional overnight guest, with playing beloved Auntie to Presley's two sons. This thing with Wyatt has gone and rearranged everything.

She agrees to give Wyatt three months, during which they will figure out their new reality. She sets some rules that everyone knows will get broken (one of those is no kissing, which, COME ON, Angie - this is Wyatt, who is irresistible!), and Corinne Michaels makes it so much fun to watch Angie lose both the battle and the war.

What I enjoy most about these books is that Michaels writes not about twenty-somethings but about people well into adulthood. Angie and Wyatt are in their late thirties. They have lived long enough to know themselves and to know what they want and need to be happy. There is no need for self-discovery. There is no need to wait and see.

There is, however, tremendous need to stay. And sometimes staying is the hardest thing to do, whether staying in one place or staying true to yourself and the one you love.

Michaels will make you cry. Oh, will she ever. She'll also give you a raging case of quivering loins (let's just say that Wyatt earned his reputation ... wink wink). Whereas Zach and Presley's story is one of second chances and finding their way back, Wyatt and Angie's story is one of finding their way toward. Each has moments of feeling a need to run away, even as they know they would much rather run to.

I loved getting to know Wyatt and Angie. I loved watching her let down her guard, and I loved watching him let go of guilt. These two show you that while love sometimes percolates over time, it also sometimes comes quickly and urgently, asking only that you stay with it.

Swooning over Wyatt!
By Christy P
Wyatt Hennington can be summed up with one word – Ah-freaking-Mazing! His character was adorable in Say You’ll Stay but you really get his whole heart with this one. He is so raw, so real, so honest and so amazingly hot that you can’t help but fall hard for him. Angie was equally amazing. So strong willed and determined to stand on her own. I loved them both. This story will take you on a beautiful bumpy ride. These two made me laugh so many times! What I like most about Corinne’s writing style is that it is so easy to put yourself into the story. She writes a real life, very relatable story, that you can easily get lost in. So to sum it up… This book killed my uterus, exploded my ovaries and stomped all over my heart and I’d read it again and again and again. 5 Wyatt is amazing stars

Review
“Forensic Pathology: Principles & Practice is the first text of Forensic Pathology that provides in-depth discussion, fairly balances controversial topics, is lavishly illustrated, and provides practical guidelines.”
― Charles V. Wetli, M.D., Chief Medical Examiner & Director of Forensic Sciences, Suffolk County, NY

“The book under review is what one would always like to have on one’s desk. It is informative, factual, well-referenced, exhaustive and extremely well illustrated. It immediately grasps one’s attention not only because it gives practical tips throughout, but also because of its rich and profuse illustrations. How richly is the book illustrated can be gauged by the fact that there are a total of more than 1800 photographs (all in full color) scattered over 671 pages of text – about 3 photographs per page!
There are some other interesting features in this book too, which set it apart from other run-of-the-mill kind of texts. One which I especially liked – and am sure, most others will like too – is a feature called “take home message”. You can read the text and cases, and then the editors will tend to drive home the point through this feature. This feature should be most useful for younger pathologists and those in training for whom this book is an absolute must.
The book is full of such practical tips throughout. To my mind the two most valuable features of this book are its rich and profuse illustrations and its practical tips. Most current books are deficient in these.
This book can be heartily recommended not only to trainees and younger pathologists, who obviously would benefit greatly from this book, but also to senior pathologists if only to re-alert them to certain common pitfalls. Certainly everyone would get to see a number of unique cases irrespective of the level of his experience.
Besides pathologists at whom this book is mainly aimed, it should also prove useful for police officers, coroners, magistrates and all other law enforcement officers. Illustrative photographs should prove useful to this section. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and this book is going to my companion for the rest of my life.”
― Internet Journal of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology

“The text is richly supported by color photographs that are nothing short of spectacular. . .This text will serve as a reference for the practicing forensic pathologist. Additionally, those embarking upon preparation for the Board examination in forensic pathology will find this text very useful.”
― Journal of Forensic Science

“This book is, undoubtedly, the most extensively illustrated textbook of forensic pathology so far. When reading Forensic Pathology, one recognizes very quickly that this book is created by highly experienced forensic pathologists. The book is well written and the references are up to date.”
― Michael Tsokos, MD, Institute of Legal Medicine, University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany

An amazing book
By A. Thillainathan
It is just unbelieveable. The collection of photographs is the best that i have come across. I have several forensic pathology books in my collection and this book has the best collection of real life photographs. The authours have stressed in almost all chapters of the limitations of the findings. This is admirable.Training as a forensic physician and a lawyer, this book is of great help.

Great book!!!!!
By izzza
This book is really helpful. It covers a wide range of forensics pathology topics and provides rich and detailed information on these topics. It can be used as a "forensics pathology for dummies" book as well as a reference book for confirmed pathologists.

And last but not least, it is full of very good color pictures (forget the usual black and white pics which provide poor information, color pictures are so realistic and so much better!), and generally speaking its look and feels are very pleasant.

Great resource
By thediener
I read this thing cover to cover and it was time well spent. Lots of high-quality full color photographs illustrating important post mortem findings. The book is organized intelligently and includes chapters that take the reader beyond the core topics of "blunt trauma" or "gunshot wounds" etc. The text is clear and easy to understand but also quite thorough. That being said, the text is not quite as comprehensive as Spitz and Fisher, and there is room for much expansion without compromising the merits of this book. A new edition appears to be coming out later this year and though the content of this first edition needs little revision, I hope it is greatly expanded.

The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment (Norton Professional Book), by Babette Rothschild

For both clinicians and their clients there is tremendous value in understanding the psychophysiology of trauma and knowing what to do about its manifestations.

This book illuminates that physiology, shining a bright light on the impact of trauma on the body and the phenomenon of somatic memory.

It is now thought that people who have been traumatized hold an implicit memory of traumatic events in their brains and bodies. That memory is often expressed in the symptomatology of posttraumatic stress disorder-nightmares, flashbacks, startle responses, and dissociative behaviors. In essence, the body of the traumatized individual refuses to be ignored.

While reducing the chasm between scientific theory and clinical practice and bridging the gap between talk therapy and body therapy, Rothschild presents principles and non-touch techniques for giving the body its due. With an eye to its relevance for clinicians, she consolidates current knowledge about the psychobiology of the stress response both in normally challenging situations and during extreme and prolonged trauma. This gives clinicians from all disciplines a foundation for speculating about the origins of their clients' symptoms and incorporating regard for the body into their practice. The somatic techniques are chosen with an eye to making trauma therapy safer while increasing mind-body integration.

Packed with engaging case studies, The Body Remembers integrates body and mind in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. It will appeal to clinicians, researchers, students, and general readers.

[I]nvaluable for clinicians working with clients, researchers, students and the general public who want to understand the psychophysiology of trauma and knowing what to do about its manifestations. ” (Scientific and Medical Network)

Excellent resource for survivors of trauma and therapists
By Ann Ueda
My interest in reading this book stems from the psychotherapeutic work I am currently doing (as a client, working with a psychotherapist) to remember my own childhood trauma and learn how to rework these memories into clear consciousness and healthier emotional responses. I have just begun this work and, as is my tendency, I went to Amazon to see what was out there that I could read to educate myself about what trauma is and, most importantly, how to heal it.

I highly recommend this book for both survivors of trauma and the mental health professionals who work with them.

I easily read this book during a long weekend. The text, although written by a mental health professional, is quite accessible even to the layperson, and has a number of examples throughout that are used to illustrate the author's points.

The book itself is divided into two main sections: Theory and Practice. Both are important to understanding the current ways we comprehend and treat trauma, based on the latest advances in the neurosciences that allow us to know better our own minds. Much of Rothschild's work hinges on the ways that the mind-body-emotions work together in experiencing, comprehending, and even storing in memory trauma that we experience. This is important, because the practice/treatment section of the book is also based on the same mind-body-emotions connection. So you must to some extent accept the mind-body-emotions framework to see the value of this book.

I do accept this framework, although not exclusively or primarily.

The second half of the book is equally rich and helpful, including a number of body-based (somatic) tools and techniques that anyone can use to begin to manage responses to trauma (and they are numerous and frequently very subtle) and then slowly start to examine the original sources of that trauma. Besides being based on or in the body, many of these techniques are also cognitive-behavioral in nature, so one must be willing to accept that set of theory as well.

Rothschild also goes into some detail about what somatic techniques can work immediately in the course of a therapy session, and these techniques could just as easily be used by the therapist as by the client. Since my therapist does not work much with somatic or cognitive behavioral techniques, I have asked that we do so, using some of the techniques in this book. (Yes, you can tell your therapist what will or might work best for you in the context of your therapy.) Equally helpful and insightful are sections that focus specifically on the interpersonal relationship clients have with their therapists in the context of therapy, a little discussed topic among professionals and never discussed among clients who often don't know what to expect during the course of therapy.

All in all, a good source of information for someone who is ready to face trauma in his/her life and wants some helpful tools for this journey.

Finally................................
By Regina Montgomery
After 26 years of thinking, "I should be over it", I now know its part of my body, not just my brain. I remember yelling out loud, THATS IT, and thinking I felt better immediately. I wasn't a loser, basket case mental job, but "my body remembers". I gave the book to my therapist, hoping she can help others. I actually contacted author to thank her, and she has a new book in the process. Thank you, Babette.........buy it, or I will let you borrow it:)
