In this book, Hugh Gusterson explores the significance of drone warfare from multiple perspectives, drawing on accounts by drone operators, victims of drone attacks, anti-drone activists, human rights activists, international lawyers, journalists, military thinkers, and academic experts.

Gusterson examines the way drone warfare has created commuter warriors and redefined the space of the battlefield. He looks at the paradoxical mix of closeness and distance involved in remote killing: is it easier than killing someone on the physical battlefield if you have to watch onscreen? He suggests a new way of understanding the debate over civilian casualties of drone attacks. He maps "ethical slippage" over time in the Obama administration's targeting practices. My only criticism of this book is its subtitle, ...

My only criticism of this book is the subtitle, "Remote Control Warfare": it fails to convey its essence. An anthropologist, Gusterson not only sets out in chilling detail what warfare has become, he challenges the fiction that it is anonymous and precise. As Sherry Turkle notes (on the back cover), "Only by muddying the waters can we bear to acknowledge what we have invented: a new and oddly intimate way station in the mechanization of death." Gusterson explores the subjective underside every aspect of this mechanization, from commuter warriors to unexamined assumptions in design and deployment, and why it matters. This book is indispensable reading for everyone concerned about drone warfare.

About the Author

Dean R. Appling is the Lester J. Reed Professor of Biochemistry and the Associate Dean for Research and Facilities for the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has taught and done research for the past 29 years. Dean earned his B.S. in Biology from Texas A&M University (1977) and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University (1981). The Appling laboratory studies the organization and regulation of metabolic pathways in eukaryotes, focusing on folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism. The lab is particularly interested in understanding how one-carbon metabolism is organized in mitochondria, as these organelles are central players in many human diseases. In addition to coauthoring the 4th edition of Biochemistry, a textbook for majors and graduate students, Dean has published over 60 scientific papers and book chapters.

 

As much fun as writing a textbook might be, Dean would rather be outdoors. He is an avid fisherman and hiker. Recently, Dean and his wife, Maureen, have become entranced by the birds on the Texas coast. They were introduced to bird-watching by coauthor Chris Mathews and his wife Kate—an unintended consequence of writing textbooks!

 

Spencer J. Anthony-Cahill is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Western Washington University (WWU), Bellingham, WA. Spencer earned his B.A. in chemistry from Whitman College, and his Ph.D. in bioorganic chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. His graduate work, in the laboratory of Peter Schultz, focused on the biosynthetic incorporation of unnatural amino acids into proteins. Spencer was an NIH postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Bill DeGrado (then at DuPont Central Research), where he worked on de novo peptide design and the prediction of the tertiary structure of the HLH DNA-binding motif. He then worked for five years as a research scientist in the biotechnology industry, developingrecombinant hemoglobin as a treatment for acute blood loss. In 1997, Spencer decided to pursue his long-standing interest in teaching and moved to WWU, where he is today. In 2012 Spencer was recognized by WWU with the Peter J. Elich Award for Excellence in Teaching. Research in the Anthony-Cahill laboratory is directed at the protein engineering and structural biology of oxygen-binding proteins. The primary focus is on circular permutation of human b-globin as a means of developing a single-chain hemoglobin with desirable therapeutic properties as a blood replacement.

 

Outside the classroom and laboratory, Spencer is a great fan of the outdoors—especially the North Cascades and southeastern Utah, where he has often backpacked, camped, climbed, and mountain biked. He also plays electric bass (poorly) in a local blues–rock band and teaches Aikido in Bellingham.

 

Christopher K. Mathews is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry at Oregon State University. He earned his B.A. in chemistry from Reed College (1958) and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Washington (1962). He served on the faculties of Yale University and the University of Arizona from 1963 until 1978, when he moved to Oregon State University as Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, a position he held until 2002. His major research interest is the enzymology and regulation of DNA precursor

metabolism and the intracellular coordination between deoxyribonucleotide synthesis and DNA replication. From 1984 to 1985, Dr. Mathews was an Eleanor Roosevelt International Cancer Fellow at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, and in 1994–1995 he held the Tage Erlander Guest Professorship at Stockholm University.

 

Dr. Mathews has published about 185 research papers, book chapters, and reviews dealing with molecular virology, metabolic regulation, nucleotide enzymology, and biochemical genetics. From 1964 until 2012 he was principal investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and the Army Research Office. He is the author of Bacteriophage Biochemistry (1971) and coeditor of Bacteriophage T4 (1983) and Structural and Organizational Aspects of Metabolic Regulation (1990). He was lead author of four editions of

Biochemistry, a textbook for majors and graduate students. His teaching experience includes undergraduate, graduate, and medical school biochemistry courses. He has backpacked and floated the mountains and rivers,

respectively, of Oregon and the Northwest. As an enthusiastic birder he has served as President of the Audubon Society of Corvallis and is President of the Great Basin Society, which operates the Malheur Field

Station in eastern Oregon.

It's no Klein Organic Chemistry text but it does the job for a one semester course. Minute mistakes and lack of clarification here and there but lots of diagrams and illustrations to elucidate content. Be aware that my entire class had issues with the Mastering Chemistry code, requiring sorting out through customer service but did get eventual access to the online content. It may be worth it to buy used (sans code) and buy the code separately direct from Pearson's website if your professor requires it.

About the Author
Ann M. Selmi has taught for over 40 years, and most of her career has been spent working with young children with or without disabilities and their teachers. For the past 8 years she has taught teachers at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where she prepares early childhood teachers to address some of the most challenging situations in the Los Angeles area. Her research focuses on the relationship between the development of language and play. She also worked for 5 years as a researcher on the cochlear implant program for young deaf children at the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles, and she spent one year as a visiting researcher at the National Institute of Child Health and Development in the Child and Family Research Section in Bethesda, Maryland.

Raymond J. Gallagher began his career as a general education teacher and as a teacher in special education. As a university educator, he has been involved in research concerning the development of young children who are at risk for and diagnosed with disabilities, and the ways they and their families are served. He continues to be involved in personnel development preparing individuals to teach in P–12 settings that serve the educational needs of all youngsters. Dr. Gallagher is a Professor of Clinical Education in the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California.

Eugenia R. Mora-Flores is an Associate Professor in the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California (USC). She teaches courses on first and second language acquisition, Latino culture, and in literacy development for elementary and secondary students. Her research interests include studies on effective practices in developing the language and literacy skills of English learners in Grades Pre-K–12. She has written more than four books in the area of literacy and academic language development (ALD) for English learners. She also works as a consultant for a variety of elementary, middle, and high schools in the areas of English language development, ALD, and writing.

Not for an 2008 or 2009

I bought this for my 2009 Vue XE. I got it to help me change my plugs and wires. I wanted to find out how to take off a door panel and the front bumper. With this book, I can not do any of this. What a waste of money. This is the first Haynes manual that I have bought that does not do what it says. If you have a 2002-2007, then this book will should work for you. This is the only book that I could find for the 09 Vue. It was my shot in the dark and it did not work at all. Oh well, my loss.

Poor Manual for Late Models of the Saturn Vue.

I chose to purchase this manual for my 2009 Saturn Vue. I have purchased Haynes Manuals for other automobiles and had been satisfied with those. Up until recently Haynes only had manuals for earlier models of the Saturn Vue. Sadly, this manual was poorly updated for later models of the Saturn Vue. If you have an earlier model of the Vue, then this manual may be of value, however if you have a later model I would definitely not recommend this book. Haynes basically did a lousy job of updating the earlier Vue manual for 2008 & 2009 Saturn Vues.

Not for me...

I bought this book with the hope that it would at least include an exploded diagram of the various sections of my car. I was also hoping for some form of part list. Those things alone would've made this purchase worthwhile. Unfortunately they're missing from this guide.

This book primarily has step-by-step text-based instructions (with occasional pictures) for the more mechanically inclined among us on how to repair various issues.

I bought this with the hope of learning more about my car in general rather than learning how to repair it. I wanted to know enough to converse with a mechanic but this manual didn't really help me with that. The text on each page is too busy and cramped and as a result it's easy to loose your place when reading.

I think the missing diagrams and part lists are a huge oversight. I'd recommend this book if you actually plan to make the repair yourself and already have quite a bit of know-how when it comes to auto repair.

Dr. Marc Sniukas is a global expert on strategic innovation and corporate entrepreneurship. Parker Lee is a veteran of the technology, entertainment and sports marketing industries. Run, don't walk, to buy, read and use The Art of Opportunity

I've read way too many business books to remember and entered into this kicking and screaming, at the insistence of the leader of our latest planning session. Yikes, was I in for a surprise! The session was much more productive than any in the past few years, by overwhelming agreement, and we will be referring back to The Art again as we execute. Maybe it's the visuals, or the layout. The process just clicked.
If you think you've seen it all, think again. We're now considering bring in one or more of the authors to facilitate. Let's see where this new approach takes us.

I purchased this book for all of our consultants at Coraggio Group. It's well-organized, insightful and forward-thinking. The authors provide useful tools that are very helpful and easy to use. excellent book!!

I was very excited when I received this book. I was delivered in a timely manner I was not expecting it to come soon. The pictures are very vivid and labeled accurately. This is a perfect book if you want to have a good command of the anatomy and is very relevant for practicing technologist. My only suggestion is that should be available in electronic form which would make it easy to carry around and convenient reference. I highly recommend this book.

Great Book, Free Shipping but it took forever to get here.

The book is great, BUT..... Ordered it July 10th and it did not ship until July 28th. It was free shipping and was stated to be delivered between July 17th and Aug 1st. I am just glad I didn't need this book I just wanted it. If it would have been for a class that is a different story, I might suggest looking around for faster service.

Excellent Book With Great Characters

Ian Cory has written the start of a very good series with his first two Centurion and Assassin books. The story was interesting and his characters were all well developed. I don't care for books without an ending but Corey has managed to keep my interest piqued. I will now have to read the next book in the series and hopefully that one will leave the trilogy with an ending. Excellent well written story.

Wonderful

This book continues the story of the search of Messara to find his wife's killer. There are many twists and turns and little things that you need to remember when you get near the end. And you think that everything is all tied up when you seem to get the real story but once again the author throws you off your horse and you will soon start on another journey through the Roman era.
