747: Creating the World's First Jumbo Jet and Other Adventures from a Life in Aviation, by Joe Sutter, Jay Spenser

747 is the thrilling story behind "the Queen of the Skies"—the Boeing 747—as told by Joe Sutter, one of the most celebrated engineers of the twentieth century, who spearheaded its design and construction. Sutter's vivid narrative takes us back to a time when American technology was cutting-edge and jet travel was still glamorous and new. With wit and warmth, he gives an insider's sense of the larger than life-size personalities—and the tensions—in the aeronautical world.

From Publishers Weekly
As leader of the Boeing company's design and engineering team that created the 747—the world's first wide-body, twin-aisle airplane—Sutter had perhaps the best overall view of all aspects of the 747's development in the mid 1960s. This engaging look at the technical, political and corporate forces that clashed over the 747 adds important details to Clive Irving's 1993 Wide-Body: The Triumph of the 747. Sutter's descriptions of the furious pace his team had to maintain proves his assertion that the 747's development process closely resembled that of aviation's colorful early days. It is fascinating to read that while the 747 later became Boeing's crowning achievement, with variations of the plane continuing to remain popular during the past three decades, various Boeing executives during the '60s "were taken in by the enticing vision" of supersonic transports like the Concorde, and Sutter had to fight "every step of the way to get the 747 designed, built, certified, and into service." 8-page b&w photo insert, 20 b&w photos throughout, not seen by PW. From Booklist
The chief engineer of the 747 here recounts his experience designing one of the most iconic airplanes in aviation history. At pains to dispel the perception that the humpbacked behemoth was a one-man show, Sutter mentions many colleagues as he relates a process that partook as much of intra- and intercorporate diplomacy as of nuts-and-bolts engineering. Indeed the narrative dynamic arises from the interaction of technical problems with the nonengineering concerns of the Boeing hierarchy. The company was in deep financial trouble at the time of development (1965-70), as its supersonic transport project hemorrhaged money. Pressure on Sutter was intense both to expedite the 747 and slash costs; in the book's climax, Sutter faces down the executives' demand that he fire thousands of his engineers. Sutter's story also revels in the intuition and technical precision that resulted in the 747's distinctive appearance and capabilities. Replete with energetic anecdotes from Sutter's non-747 life, this memoir will fascinate fans of aviation. Gilbert Taylor

“As magnificent and soaring as the big bird itself, Joe Sutter’s true story is . . . fascinating.” (Homer Hickam, author of Rocket Boys)

Fair book but detailed. Solid PM concepts and excellent backstory. Would recommend for practicing PMs with a few years of experience before reading.

Joe Sutter IS " one of the great ones "
By D. SHUPER
The above partial quote is plagerized from Joes book as he quotes Charles Linderbergh comments about the 747 which in its entirety was " This is one of the great ones "

I'm a retired Boeing Engineer, and while never meeting or dealing with Joe since I was working in other areas [supersonic transport, etc ] I did hear and work in later years with several who did have personal knowledge. Joe pretty much tells it like it WAS/IS.

I especially appreciated his efforts to avoid highly technical terms, and in few simple words explaining some of the basics of flight, powerplants, design criteria, safety concerns, etc. In some ways, it could be considered ' high school' level courses on flight and design criteria- but without ' talking' down to the reader.

It is an 'easy read' and does lift the curtain on a few, but not all the insider political games typical of Boeing and most other aerospace companies. [ I've also worked at Rockwell and Ling Temco Vought ]

Joe is definitely from the 'old school' as far as ethics and integrity, and his comments about serving on the Challenger Shuttle disaster commission and the NASA attitude re safety and risk in the last chapter seem as if they were written this week [ June 16,2006- see news items about safety concerns re the impending Shuttle flight in July 2006 ]. Hopefully, his comments and concerns will NOT be proven to be " deja vue all over AGAIN."

In my opinion - a keeper, and readable from Junior high up.

Building The Greatest Commercial Airliner Yet
By Dianne Roberts
747 is simply a must for anyone in the aerospace design industry, or for people who are just interested in how the 747 was built. Joe Sutter, the airplane's director of engineering and the one most responsible for its actual design, has written a trim, quick, and enjoyable to read history of the 747 program encased in a semi-autobiography.

After a few chapters exploring the author's early life, including his college time and Navy life, the book spends its bulk on a 50,000 foot overview of what was going on with the 747 development program from its inception until its most recent incarnation to fly in the form of the 747-400 family of derivatives. The final chapters sweep the remainder of the author's professional career including his service on the Challenger Disaster commission. Joe (and after reading the book you definitely get the feeling he would prefer to be called that then Mr. Sutter) has certainly led a very interesting life, and has had the privilege of experiencing a truly gilded age of aviation from the peaks of its ambitions and the lows of its difficulties and uncertainty. But the star of the book is truly the magnificent 747 aircraft and even his more autobiographical chapters tie into the aircraft and its design.

Much of the author's life exerted an inexorable influence on the design philosophy he brought to the plane. As an early child he grew up in Seattle and watched, literally from his neighborhood, as Boeing would roll out new aircraft through the twenties and thirties and try to push aviaiton forward and make the world a smaller place. Caught up in the majesty of flight Joe wanted very badly to design airplanes, but as WWII dawned when he was in college that would have to wait for more important world events to be sorted out. Joining the Navy he became a deck officer on a destroyer escort in the Atlantic, where he had a formative experience. Returning to Boston Harbor his ship started to become glazed with rapidly growing layers of thick ice in the midst of a storm, making the ship dangerously top heavy. With no anti-icing system and no ability to get people out on deck to hack off the ice the crew had to just ride out the storm praying they wouldn't die. From this moment on the author decided safety would be a primary criteria of anything he designed.

The legacy of the 747 is one of carrying on Boeing's legacy of leading the pack in aviation with an unparalleled record of safety, thanks to smart design and brute force quadruple redundancy. (Brute force is by no means meant perjoratively here!) The 747 came about during an amazing time in aviation history. It was the first wide body airliner (against the initial full double decker narrow body wishes of its launch customer), the first turbofan (or fanjet as they are sometimes called) powered airliner, and it was designed by a slimmed down workforce in the shadow of the ill fated 2707 SST, while the 727 and 737 were also absorbing significant company resources, and while Lockheed's L-1011 and Douglas' DC-10 provided competition. The story of how this giant came about and triumphed in spite of the decidely low expectations Boeing clearly had for it at the begining is a truly fascinating one, filled with such aviation luminaries as Juan Trippe, Bill Allen and Charles Lindbergh. Joe's life on the program is also filled with equally amazing events including state department sponsored dinners with the Soviets in Paris at the height of the Cold War (in the spirit of "Detente"), and trips all over the world ranging from the expected places like Japan and New York, to Baghdad.

In addition to being a great story well told, there are real gems here for aviation program managers and aircraft designers about how to make a successful airplane. Absolutely worth reading, and would be something I would like to see as a textbook for aeronautical engineers, perhaps in an aerospace history course, to give them some real world perspective that is so often lacking in modern engineering degrees.

An outstanding book, highly recommended!

Detroit Lions fans - this book rocks!
By Tracy Ward
My husband has been a diehard Detroit Lions fan for years, through the good, bad, the ugly and every Thanksgiving Day game. This was one of those books where he kept looking up and saying, "Hey, I didn't know this, did you know this?"

The writing? Top-notch but not surprising. We've followed sportswriter Paula Pasche for years and she continues the tradition in the book of exceptional and entertaining writing that's balanced. Like the way she looks at life and football.

Will be getting copies for the Lions fans in the family for Christmas and Father's Day.

My boyfriend is a rabid Lions fan, and keeps this in the john for "sit down occasions" ;). He says it is fun and informative, and just right for the purpose. I didn't plan on it being for this rather odd purpose, but if he is happy I am too!

Great gift for the Lions fan in your life. This was a gift for my husband who mainly reads only sports related topics and the newspaper. He read it for a couple days straight and still refers to it from time to time. A great buy.

Signs Preceding the End of the World, by Yuri Herrera

Signs Preceding the End of the World is one of the most arresting novels to be published in Spanish in the last ten years. Yuri Herrera does not simply write about the border between Mexico and the United States and those who cross it. He explores the crossings and translations people make in their minds and language as they move from one country to another, especially when there’s no going back.

Traversing this lonely territory is Makina, a young woman who knows only too well how to survive in a violent, macho world. Leaving behind her life in Mexico to search for her brother, she is smuggled into the USA carrying a pair of secret messages – one from her mother and one from the Mexican underworld.

Review
"Yuri Herrera is Mexico’s greatest novelist. His spare, poetic narratives and incomparable prose read like epics compacted into a single perfect punch – they ring your bell, your being, your soul. Signs Preceding the End of the World delivers a darkly mythological vision of the U.S. as experienced by the 'not us' that is harrowing and fierce. The profoundly dignified, mind-boggling Makina, our guide and translator, is the heroine who redeems us all: she is the Truth." Francisco Goldman, author of Say Her Name

"Yuri Herrera must be a thousand years old. He must have travelled to hell, and heaven, and back again. He must have once been a girl, an animal, a rock, a boy, and a woman. Nothing else explains the vastness of his understanding." Valeria Luiselli, author of Faces in the Crowd

"Herrera never forgets the turbulent and moving humanity of his protagonist: adroit, angry, ineluctable, Makina is destined to become one of the essential characters of Mexico’s new literature . . . Herrera creates a radically new language . . . and condenses into a few pages what other authors need hundreds to convey." Jorge Volpi, author of In Search of Klingsor

"Yuri Herrera's Signs Preceding the End of the World is a masterpiece, a haunting and moving allegory about violence and the culture built to support and celebrate that violence. Of the writers of my generation, the one I most admire is Yuri Herrera." Daniel Alarcón, author of At Night We Walk in Circles

"Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera confirms his status as a storyteller skilled at creating intense storylines and using original language. It is as adept at depicting wretched conditions as it is of elevating the humble and everyday to symbolic dimensions. And that symbolism, to be sure, has something of the Kafkaesque." Arturo García Ramos, ABC

"It’s fair to say that Yuri Herrera follows in the footsteps of compatriot Juan Rulfo, perhaps the master par excellence of creating limbos, spectral spaces in which the characters—real Schrödinger’s cats—reside halfway between the living and the dead." Javier Moreno, Quimera

"The book amazes with the precise and persuasive beauty of its words. New words are created or transformed in order to tell what cannot be told." María José Obiol, El País

"[T]his marvellously rich, slim novel is working on many levels . . . Herrera’s great achievement lies in elevating the harsh epic of “crossing” to the “other side” to soaring myth. There are allusions to Odysseus, Orpheus and the Styx, the river of Greek mythology that was a border to the Underworld; as well as Mesoamerican stories of shapeshifting and rebirth . . . Herrera’s metaphors grasp the freedom, and the alarming disorientation, of transition and translation . . . Translator Lisa Dillman has found a language both blunt and lyrical for Herrera’s many neologisms." Maya Jaggi, The Guardian

"Short, suspenseful . . . outlandish and heartbreaking." New York Times

"Herrera’s writing is poetic and defamiliarizing; translator Lisa Dillman has done well to capture his neologisms, which shift the setting into the surreal . . . In this legend-rich book, to immigrate is to enter forever the land of the shades." Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal

"Indeed, the nine short chapters tell a very straightforward quest story, and Herrera plants dangerous criminals and vigilant border patrollers around every corner. But it’s the imagery, by turns moving and nightmarish, that makes this brief book memorable . . . This is a haunting book that delivers a strange, arresting experience." Publishers Weekly

"Francisco Goldman’s declaration on the cover of this book, that Yuri Herrera is Mexico’s greatest novelist, sold me. I admire Goldman’s own work, so the recommendation couldn’t have come from a more trusted source." Jonathon Sturgeon, Flavorwire

"This is a gravity greater than earth's norm. Incidents, phrasings that suggest the novel could shift to another realm continue. They are pregnant with potentiality, and tension of potentiality is one of life's great pleasures, even, especially, in the discomfort that comes with it. It creates only one of the ways that Signs Preceding the End of the World holds you in rapture . . . Signs is a novel of language, meant to be translated because it is so aware of the journeys language takes, from one to another, and within their boundaries." P.T. Smith, Bookslut

"This is a gorgeous, crisp little thing. And although Signs . . . is no epic – accounting for chapter breaks it clocks in at under 100 short pages – Yuri Herrera has managed to achieve such extraordinary scope, of space and meaning, without any sense of hurry or clutter … Signs... is an important work, given the tenor of the immigration debate in the US and internationally. Herrera and Makina make a mockery of old-order American patriotism, which is easy to do but tough to actually pull off. The whole book is in fact a tiny exercise in bold and clever writing done with verve." Angus Sutherland, The Skinny

"[A] short, brutal, urgent missive of a book . . . Herrera’s prose, as translated by Lisa Dillman, has some of McCarthy’s doomy intonations, his terse impressionism, and his obvious debts to Beckett, Hemingway and Faulkner . . . There’s the same nervy hovering around the edge of allegory and never quite committing to the jump. And the landscape, of course, is the same … But Herrera is—well—better . . . Herrera writes literature. Signs Preceding packs a fractal complexity into its furiously concentrated sentences; it’s slangy, impish, iterative, slightly manic even at its saddest. Herrera has everything McCarthy doesn’t: humour, kindness, politics that don’t stink." Pete Mitchell, The Quietus

"Signs Preceding the End of the World is filled with layers of meaning and symbolism, with Herrera’s brilliant command of visual metaphors effortlessly weaving together a host of narrative threads … his use of complex symbolism throughout, and his gift for transforming abstract idioms and metaphors into concrete images makes Signs Preceding the End of the World a worthy examination of what it is to ‘cross the border." — Debjani Biswas-Hawkes, Literateur

"Signs Preceding the End of the World is one of the most arresting novels to be published in Spanish in the last ten years. Yuri Herrera does not simply write about the border between Mexico and the United States and those who cross it. He explores the crossings and translations people make in their minds and language as they move from one country to another, especially when there’s no going back." Literalab

"Yuri Herrera is one of Mexico’s proudest literary exports, and his Signs Preceding the End of the World … reads like scripture, the received words of an all-knowing wise man." Jane Graham, The Big Issue

"Perky crowd-funded publishers & Other Stories are rapidly gaining a name for unearthing hidden gems of world literature and this novel by Mexican author Yuri Herrera can only enhance that reputation. Set on the Mexican/US border, it tells a deceptively simple tale that is simultaneously beguiling and harrowing . . . In nine short chapters and barely 100 pages, Herrera gives us the beating heart of his protagonist. Resourceful and feisty, Makina pursues her twin tasks with determination but with a shrewd appreciation of her chances of success." Peter Whittaker, New Internationalist

"The story’s tough young heroine is Makina . . . The author has created Makina both street-smart and observant and we can see how she is capable of defending herself. We hear too, in her inner voice, the by-play of the two languages, what she calls ‘latin’ and ‘anglo’, and how they can fuse into a third with varying proportions according to circumstances . . . Talented, polyglot translator Lisa [Dillman] has risen to the challenge by creating a language that is not jarringly americanised and still conveys the thought processes of a latin-tongued protagonist in an exciting English translation. This is another example of the sterling work of the publisher & Other Stories." Michael Johnston, Akanos Publishing

"In Signs Preceding the End of the World, Yuri Herrera has given Spanish-language literature the code we needed to name the birth of the new border cultures; the creation of a new world that is changeable, volatile, sweet and terrible." Ignacio Padilla

"Both author and translator deserve praise for creating and successfully interpreting this distinctive voice, which stays with you long after the book is finished." Workshy Fop

"Herrera has written a novel that connects the contemporary with the timeless." Jason DeYoung, 3:am

"Herrera’s work is a double edged sword, poetic for its sparseness, but leaving the reader hungry for more. A highly-rewarding gulp of a novella, jam-packed with all the intrigue of an epic." Eloise Stevens, Sounds and Colours

"It might be a re-telling of the Odyssey at the Mexican border." Janet Potter, The Millions

"Yuri Herrera’s Signs Preceding the End of the World is one of those rare volumes that manages to explore language in a new way, tell a compelling story, and create memorable characters all at the same time . . . The author’s immense talent is evident in each page, in just about every sentence of the novel . . . The author employs language and a literary perspective you won’t soon forget, his images haunting like a dream." Alina Cohen, The Rumpus

"Stunning . . . It’s not the story itself, but Herrera’s brilliant telling of it, his ability to capture his subject’s thoughts, fears, and desires and so eloquently convey all that she’s experiencing, that will leave you spellbound, aching for more." Typographical era

"To write in such a short and simple style, yet to deliver something as moving and memorable takes great skill." David Dickinson, The Journal

"The narrative invites reflection on the migrant experience and cultural difference; it also supplies the excitement of an adventure with gangsters, guns and false leads . . . Yuri Herrera combines a dreamlike setting with vigorous style." Anthony Cummins, Times Literary Supplement

"Two words: Read it. In nine short chapters you encounter all the magic of Alice in Wonderland, the darkness of Dante’s Inferno, the dystopia of McCarthy’s The Road … The language is wonderful, at times completely original, to capture the feel of the original." JM Schreiber for Guardian Books Blog

"There’s grit, and there’s an attention to detail, but reality drifts in through filters throughout. It gets under your skin in weird ways." Tobias Carroll, Vol1Brooklyn

"A profoundly important book, and one of the few such works to also have the distinction of being a profoundly enjoyable book." Pop Matters

"In its hundred-odd pages, Signs Preceding the End of the World manages to be many things at once: an allegory, a dark myth, an epic, a compelling meditation on language." Adam Levy, Music and Literature

"This is a novel of carefully rendered details, given to the reader gracefully, as if they are simple or casual observations . . . The brilliance of this novel is that, as grounded as it is in physical experiences, it is this psychological space that it most inhabits . . . A novel whose thinness belies its depth, Signs Preceding the End of the World makes me rejoice that more of Herrerra’s work will soon be published for English readers. It is such a blessing that this work, first published in Spanish six years ago, has made the crossing." Literary Review US

"Signs is full of exhilarating moments, sharp, economic turns, both at plot and sentence level . . . Personal and expansive, dense but compact, Signs Preceding the End of the World offers its readers a timeless and timely epic in miniature." Biblioklept

"A dazzling little thing, containing so much more than the width of its spine should allow. I am in awe-filled love with its heroine: Makina is a vibrantly real presence in a shadowy world of constant threat; her voice perfectly rendered; her unflappable poise tested, but never broken." Gayle Lazda, London Review Bookshop, London

An excellent little masterpiece
By Santos R. Vásquez
An excellent little masterpiece... The reader will not be disappointed. The story is visceral and and surreal in a very modern and up do date way. The language is unique and the story flows like one big daydream into another and into another... It is Orpheus and "Alice" of the border and much more.
It is a little story and journey that happens in the crux of two countries and cultures. This story, this event may change you forever... is the reader up to it? Recommended highly.... Remember there's no turning back. I am looking forward for more Yuri Herrera in the years to come!

Well Worth the Investment
By Ken Lawrence
Fantastic if short work. Practically a novella. A rich, deep beautiful story aided by a marvelous translation. The less you know about the story going in, the more gripping it is. A modern mythology.

Book Review: Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera | Reading and Gaming for Justice
By Brendon
See original review on my blog: [...]

Very rarely do I get blown away completely by a book. There are books I really enjoy for many different reasons. However, only once in a while do I deem a book one of my favorites of all time. Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera and translated by Lisa Dillman is one of those books. The entire experience was a ‘once in one hundred books’ type of experience. I was enamored by the story and the prose. I did not want to put the book down even though I was exhausted and needed to go to sleep. I read chapters and reread chapters. I hit flow as a reader: a state of mind where I was so engaged with the narrative that time passed without my realization. I committed to writing a review of the book; however, I am still collecting my thoughts. In no way do I think I can do this book or Yuri Herrera justice in this review and I will try to convey my reading experience. If you have not gathered yet, I really enjoyed Signs at the End of the World and I immediately added it to my ‘favorites’ and ‘to reread’ lists.

We start out meeting Makina, a young woman living in Mexico, standing at the edge of a sinkhole, talking about how the insanity of the Earth has finally started messing with her. This initial image sets the tone for the rest of Makina’s journey. She is asked by her mother to cross the border to deliver a message to her brother who crossed a while back. To do so, Makina must make deals with shady men to deliver messages to the underworld in order to ensure her passage across and back over the border. The journey is harrowing and Yuri Herrera is a master as putting words together, forming sparse but poetic chapters dripping with emotion and feeling. Usually, I do not tend to like authors who build worlds and tell stories while withholding very descriptive language. However, here the sparseness is magnificent and the credit goes to Herrera for his ability to tailor words to work for him.

One of my favorite parts of the book is when Makina is speaking to her brother. I will not go into details for the sake of saving my readers from spoilers, but those passages were filled with so much emotion and truth about the character’s experience of crossing the border and being disconnected from the rest of the family. This conversation is layered with the struggle of racial, cultural, and familial identity in a country that accepts none of Makina or her brother. Although the chapter is relatively short, the few words Herrera provides impacted me immensely as a reader.

I must also give credit to the translator, Lisa Dillman. I understand how difficult it must be to translate any novel, let alone one by Yuri Herrera. A great translation takes much time and effort. As Dillman states in her note after the book, she spent a huge amount of effort reading to increase both the breadth and depth of her experience with many different types of translated works. In addition, Dillman stayed in constant contact with Herrera to ensure she was capturing the original essence and soul of the work. This book was short and sparse and I think that made the job harder for Dillman to complete well. She could have taken an easier way out with translation, but she chose to honor and uplift Herrera’s voice with her own work. I think translated works lose a bit of something no matter how great the job. Reading Signs Preceding the End of the World floored me in English, I can only imagine the experience reading it in it’s original Spanish.

Glad I got this textbook!
By KM, NRP/FF
I bought just this single book out of the series. Sadly, it's not the text for my Paramedic Class thus why I decided to purchase it. I got it on the Kindle Edition so I could have it on my laptop/ iPAD.

This is the best book I've read so far during my EMS learning. It's easy to read, pages laid out well and has real world applications through each part. Puts everything together to make sense. For me, reading this I felt like it's all good info and doesn't have "filler" content (if you can understand what I'm saying). I'm a very slow reader, so I like detail and knowledge in as few as words as possible.

I plan to buy several more of the series as supplemental books for my Paramedic Studies. Also, the kindle version makes it easy to search a word or phrase and find what you want to look up. Faster than an index and such.

I will GLADLY spend the money for these books! It's nice that they are broken down, so you don't have a 10lb textbook that takes up so much room to carry all the time.

KUDOS and Thank you to Dr. Bledsoe and team for these!!!

We Need New Names: A Novel (La Times - Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction), by NoViolet Bulawayo

A remarkable literary debut -- shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize! The unflinching and powerful story of a young girl's journey out of Zimbabwe and to America.

Darling is only ten years old, and yet she must navigate a fragile and violent world. In Zimbabwe, Darling and her friends steal guavas, try to get the baby out of young Chipo's belly, and grasp at memories of Before. Before their homes were destroyed by paramilitary policemen, before the school closed, before the fathers left for dangerous jobs abroad.

But Darling has a chance to escape: she has an aunt in America. She travels to this new land in search of America's famous abundance only to find that her options as an immigrant are perilously few. NoViolet Bulawayo's debut calls to mind the great storytellers of displacement and arrival who have come before her-from Junot Diaz to Zadie Smith to J.M. Coetzee-while she tells a vivid, raw story all her own.

From Booklist
In Bulawayo’s engaging and often disturbing semiautobiographical first novel, 10-year-old Darling describes, with childlike candor and a penetrating grasp of language, first, her life in Zimbabwe during its so-called Lost Decade and then her life as a teenager in present-day America. What is at once delightful and disturbing is the fact that young Darling and her friends are so resilient amidst chaos. Darling must cope with absentee parents gone to who-knows-where, seeking jobs and a better life; abusive adults; and murdering bands of self-appointed police in a country gone horribly wrong. Yet she evinces a sense of chauvinism regarding her corrupt homeland when she joins her aunt in America. There she discovers a country that has fallen into a different kind of chaos, primarily economic. She and her new family struggle while America fails to live up to her hopes. Ultimately what lingers is Bulawayo’s poignant insights into how a person decides what to embrace and what to surrender when adapting to a new culture in a new land. --Donna Chavez

One of the New York Times Notable Books of the Year for 2013

One of National Public Radio's Great Reads of 2013

"A deeply felt and fiercely written debut novel ... The voice Ms. Bulawayo has fashioned for [Darling] is utterly distinctive - by turns unsparing and lyrical, unsentimental and poetic, spiky and meditative." --- Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

"Bulawayo describes all this in brilliant language, alive and confident, often funny, strong in its ability to make Darling's African life immediate ... She demonstrates a striking ability to capture the uneasiness that accompanies a newcomers arrival in America." -- Uzodinma Iweala, The New York Times Book Review

"Bulawayo mixes imagination and reality, combining an intuitive attention to detail with startling, visceral imagery ... This book is a provocative, haunting debut from an author to watch." - Elle

"Bulawayo, whose prose is warm and clear and unfussy, maintains Darling's singular voice throughout, even as her heroine struggles to find her footing. Her hard, funny first novel is a triumph." -- Entertainment Weekly

"Nearly as incisive about the American immigrant experience as it is about the failings of Mugabe's regime [in Zimbabwe]." -- National Public Radio

"Bulawayo's first novel is original, witty and devastating." ---People Magazine

"Ms. Bulawayo's artistry is such that we can't help but see ourselves in that wider world ... Darling is a dazzling life force with a rich, inventive language all her own, funny and perceptive but still very much a child ... It would be hard to overstate the freshness of Ms. Bulawayo's language, with words put together in utterly surprising ways that communicate precisely." ---Judy Wertheimer, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"Writing with poignant clarity and hard-hitting imagery, Bulawayo delivers this first work as an offering of hope." --The New York Daily News

"How does a writer tell the story of a traumatised nation without being unremittingly bleak? NoViolet Bulawayo manages it by forming a cast of characters so delightful and joyous that the reader is seduced by their antics at the same time as finding out about the country's troubles." -- Leyla Sanai, The Independent

"Bulawayo has written a powerful novel. Her gift as a visual storyteller should propel her to a bright future -- a dream fulfilled, no matter the country"-- Korina Lopez, USA Today

"NoViolet Bulawayo is a powerful, authentic, nihilistic voice - feral, feisty, funny - from the new Zimbabwean generation that has inherited Robert Mugabe's dystopia." -Peter Godwin, betselling author of The Fear and When a Crocodile Eats the Sun

"NoViolet Bulawayo has created a world that lives and breathes - and fights, kicks, screams, and scratches, too. She has clothed it in words and given it a voice at once dissonant and melodic, utterly distinct." -Aminatta Forna, author of The Memory of Love and Ancestor Stones

"An exquisite and powerful first novel, filled with an equal measure of beauty and horror and laughter and pain. The lives (and names) of these characters will linger in your mind, and heart, long after you're done reading the book. NoViolet Bulawayo is definitely a writer to watch." -Edwidge Danticat, award-winning author of Brother, I'm Dying and Breath, Eyes, Memory

"Fans of Junot Díaz, who, as fiction editor of Boston Review, published NoViolet Bulawayo's early work, will love her debut novel, We Need New Names ...Bulawayo's use of contemporary culture (the kids play a game in which they hunt for bin Laden and, later, text like their lives depend on it), as well as her fearless defense of the immigrant experience through honoring the cadence of spoken language, sets this book apart-on the top shelf." -- Kristy Davis, Oprah.com

"[Bulawayo] shows the beaming promise of a young Junot Diaz. With a style all her own-one steeped in wit and striking imagination-she movingly details the complexities of the immigrant experience."―The American Prospect

"A stunning debut... The hyper-imaginative and often surreal ways Bulawayo's narrator describes people, places, and experiences almost sound like things imagined in her sleep."―Flavorwire

A Great Debut
By Mocha Girl
My thoughts:

- An enlightening debut that takes the reader to Zimbabwe during the Mugabe regime. The subject matter is a bit grim as the novel opens with Darling and her friends leaving their shanty town to roam the finer neighborhoods in search of guava for food.

- We learn of the daily routines of the displaced civilians: the adults who neglect children in search for work in the mines and the borders; the games the children play to fight boredom and make sense of the dire futures.

- The author covers the political unrest and promise for "change" in the upcoming election; the hope, misogyny, and hypocrisy of religious doctrine; the social ills and financial ruin that befall a country under a corrupt dictatorship.

- The later half of the story explores the cultural nuances, language challenges, assimilation challenges as Darling relocates to America to stay with an aunt. The environmental differenced, culture shock, and disillusionment with an impoverished Detroit, Michigan.

- Homesickness plagues both aunt and niece, and the realities of their one-way journey weighs heavily on the hearts and guilt burdens their sub-conscious; but the determination to make it in the US is the driving force toward success, so they work very hard and long for permanent, legal residency.

- The author gave me enough to easily empathize and sympathize with Darling, her friends and family. I enjoyed Darling's points of view, her voice, and her innocence.

- I absolutely LOVED the cross-cultural references, nuances, similarities/differences, and challenges: Interactions with non-Africans, African Americans; the notion of smiling; differences in child-rearing; the significance of a "name" and the need for new ones; views of education, the stigma and impact of AIDS, the dismantling of the family unit, etc.

- I'll definitely consider future work from this author.

Not Perfect But Close
By Robert B. Lamm
I have read quite a few books about the tragedy that seems to be pervasive in Africa - would-be liberators from tyranny and corruption take over, only to become more tyrannical and corrupt than their predecessors. "We Need New Names" tells the same story, but from a new perspective, at least for me - that of a 10 year-old girl whose life "before" has vanished into poverty and an absence of structure of any sort. The first half of the book tells the story of Darling in this environment, and the second half brings her to live with her aunt in the United States - in "destroyed" Michigan. She is something of a lost soul in both locales, even as she adapts and seems to fit into both places as best she can.

Ms. Bulawayo's writing is beyond impressive - stark yet fluid, cynical yet sweet. The book seems so real (not that a 60+ white guy in Florida would know), and I must say that I agreed with the blurbs on the back cover, which use words like "powerful," "beauty," "laughter," "pain," "nihilstic," "feral," "feisty" and "funny." At the same time, I can't quite give it five stars because notwithstanding its reality it keeps the reader at a distance and doesn't really tell a story as such; the ending is consistent with this, as the book just sort of ends. At the same time, I recognize that the gulf between Darling's story and my own life may just be too wide to create the kind of engaging empathy that I found the book lacking. So I hope Ms. Bulawayo will forgive me if I "only" give this very good book 4.5 stars.

There seems to be a new crop of authors writing about Africans becoming strangers in a strange land - "Ghana Must Go" and "Americanah" among them - but it's going to be hard for any of them to top "We Need New Names," and I urge you to read it.

Straight Outta' Zimbabwe
By A. Ross
I make a point of trying to read whatever African fiction comes across my path, but this is only the second work I've read from Zimbabwe (the other was Shimmer Chinodya's 1991 book, Harvest of Thorns). From my amateur perspective, it appears that the bulk of post-colonial African fiction concerned itself with recounting the colonial condition, the struggle for independence, and the disappointments of life under native dictators. Zimbabwe's independence came a bit later than most, but Harvest of Thorns manages to hit all three of these themes quite well, and so I would recommend it as well worth reading before you pick this book up.

What this collection of linked stories about a young girl named Darling does, is explore what seems to be the current fixation of the African fiction that makes it to America -- namely, getting the hell out of Africa to a better place, and the toll that takes on the soul (see, for example Americanah and Ghana Must Go). In the first half of the book, we see contemporary Zimbabwe through the eyes of 10-year-old Darling and her daily life in a shanty-town. It's a rich and colorful portrait of a place, but it's hard not to feel like each chapter/story was designed to highlight some particular issue. For example, one chapter focuses on a hucksterish Christian pastor, another on the toll of AIDS, another on Chinese penetration of Africa, another on rape, another on inept international aid assistance, another on mob rule. And although Bylawayo does a nice job weaving all of these issues into Darling's life, via her family and friends, some readers might feel like there was a checklist of topics that she was ticking off with each part.

The second half of the book is about Darling's dislocation and culture shock in America, as she joins her aunt in "Destroyed Michigan" (one of the many bits of wordplay that dot the book, and one that is far too on the nose to be effective). This, while also generally well-written and described, is somewhat less interesting, if only for its familiarity. There are some engaging scenes -- I especially liked the chapter where Darling skips school with two other girls (one American, one Nigerian) and they karaoke-watch internet porn and later get in an argument in which the two African girls mock the American girl's way of speaking.
