well worth the money
By Toby Budden
i was reluctant to buy this book due to the cost and that it never seems to go on sale. all i can tell you there was i was nuts to not think it would be worth it. there is so much information crammed in here. it is very well written. there are awesome pictures and diagrams on how to rig. the author tells you want tackle or hardware to use where. there is absolutely no substitute for a good teacher in the climbing world. but this book is a great standby to remind you. if you took the time to read my review, thank you, and you should have already bought this book.

ON ROPE
By J & G Simons
It has a lot of good information, BUT the illustrations are very amateurish and child like, when I pay almost $40.00 dollars for an illustrated book I want good illustrations! In my estimation the book is only worth about at the most $20.00 dollars. Try and find a used copy!

I.M. Pei: Complete Works, by Philip Jodidio, Janet Adams Strong

When I. M. Pei was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1983, the jury said he had "given this century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms." I. M. Pei: Complete Works, the first and definitive survey of the master architect, attests to this statement by showcasing Pei’s transcendent, sculptural forms in over fifty projects and more than 300 illustrations, culminating in the last works he is currently completing. Often working in a spare geometry with a palette of stone, concrete, glass, and steel, Pei—who began his career pioneering public housing projects in New York City—has taken his vision of modern architecture across the globe with commissions in locations as diverse as Quatar, China, Luxembourg, Japan, and Germany. Meanwhile, major projects such as the JFK Library in Boston and the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., have made him a household name in the United States.

SINGULAR PEI
By Shannon Deason
When I think of I.M. Pei, elegant persision come to mind, his is an artistic engineer's approach to architecture. While, I must confess, I prefer Richard Meier, Renzo Piano, and Calatrava to Pei, he still stands out as one of the great architects of the last 25 years. This book is fantastic tribute to this soft spoken, elegant man. The text is scholarly, but not dry and the images really capture the thrill of Pei's artistic engineering. Pei's best work, the Grand Lourve and the National Gallery are given their pride of place in this book, as are some of his lesser known works, this book truly is comprehensive, although being from Houston, I would have like to have seen the Chase Tower profiled, it really exemplifies, I believe better than any building he designed, the good and the not so good in his work, it is at once a soaring sculpture, but at second glance sort of benal and lacking in warmth or cashe, when you compare his building to the unabashed panshe of Phillip Johnson's Republic Bank across the street, you are left with the enigma that is Pei's work and some of the best work Pei get credit for, such as the Hancock Tower in Boston and Fountain Place in Dallas are acually the great Henry Cobb's work..now id love to see a book on him. All, and all, an excellent omage to Pei.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey

An international bestseller and the basis for the hugely successful film, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is one of the defining works of the 1960s.

In this classic novel, Ken Kesey’s hero is Randle Patrick McMurphy, a boisterous, brawling, fun-loving rebel who swaggers into the world of a mental hospital and takes over. A lusty, life-affirming fighter, McMurphy rallies the other patients around him by challenging the dictatorship of Nurse Ratched. He promotes gambling in the ward, smuggles in wine and women, and openly defies the rules at every turn. But this defiance, which starts as a sport, soon develops into a grim struggle, an all-out war between two relentless opponents: Nurse Ratched, backed by the full power of authority, and McMurphy, who has only his own indomitable will. What happens when Nurse Ratched uses her ultimate weapon against McMurphy provides the story’s shocking climax.

“BRILLIANT!”—Time

“A SMASHING ACHIEVEMENT...A TRULY ORIGINAL NOVEL!”—Mark Schorer

From Library Journal
Kesey's new introduction to this anniversary edition could very well be the last thing he worked on before shuffling off this mortal coil in 2001. Additionally, 25 sketches he drew while working at a mental institution in the 1950s, the inspiration for the novel, are littered throughout. Critics are divided on the meaning of the book: Is it a tale of good vs. evil, sanity over insanity, or humankind trying to overcome repression amid chaos? Whichever, it is a great read.

Review
"A glittering parable of good and evil." —The New York Times Book Review

"A roar of protest against middlebrow society’s Rules and the Rulers who enforce them." —Time

From the Inside Flap
An international bestseller, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest defined the 1960s era of ever-widening perspectives and ominous repressive forces. Full of mischief, insight, and pathos, Kesey's powerful story of a mental ward and its inhabitants probes the meaning of madness, often turning conventional notions of sanity and insanity on their heads.

The tale is chronicled by the seemingly mute Indian patient, Chief Bromden; its hero is Randle Patrick McMurphy, the boisterous, brawling, fun-loving rebel who encourages gambling, drinking, and sex in the ward, and rallies the other patients around him by challenging the dictatorial rule of Big Nurse. McMurphy's defiance -- which begins as a sport -- develops into a grim struggle with the awesome power of the "Combine", concluding with shattering, tragic results. In its unforgettable portrait of a man teaching the value of self-reliance and laughter destroyed by forces of hatred and fear, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a classic parable that has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time.

Fabulous and Inspirational
By Hassan Galadari
This novel officially ends the 4-book reading that I had set forth to get my teeth into this summer. I must say, that it truly stands out from anything I had read before it, be it this summer or anytime for that matter. Ken Kesey weaves a tale that is smart, witty, sometimes insane and ultimately tragic. Though the setting is mainly in a mental asylum somewhere in Oregon, this story has a universal appeal to it that can be felt by anyone, anwhere in this world.
R.P. McMurphy is a sane man that, due to a brush with the law, opts for being committed in a mental asylum rather than be incarcerated with hard labor. Upon his entry in the secluded world of the asylum, he strips all the barriers formed and starts laying his own rules, in his own way. This leads to problems with the head honcho of the place. A big, gruesome, and menacingly evil Nurse Ratched, dubbed Big Nurse for her huge frame and even huger bosom. The rollercoaster, that patient McMurphy takes the inmates through, finally leads them to realize the ultimate goal. That man, no matter the situation, can always hold his destiny in his hands. This knowledge, achieved in the end, does not come without a price.
Set in the late 60s, early 70s, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a gem of modern literary works that came out at the time. It brought out a wonderfully-made movie, starring Jack Nicholson as McMurphy. The role defined him as an actor to be reckoned with. Though the mavie is seen through the eyes of McMurphy, the novel's perspective looks at things through the eyes of a big half white, half Native American inmate, that acts deaf and dumb in front of the asylum's staff. The narrative, because it is through the eyes of a mental patient, can at times be truly insane. That's where the fun really lies. Kesey works his magic in making us feel the insanity and despair of the patients. He can be funny, in a laugh out loud kind of fashion. He can also be tragic, when you realize what the inmates go through each passing day. The novel is a definitive treatment of the age old abode of individual versus establishment.
This is a very human story, with a lot of suffering and exploration of man's insecurities. It has become a classic that some schools have even recommended as part of their curriculum. Through all the ups and downs of the story, I was, forever inspired and ultimately liberated in mind to finally realize that you can take away a man's life, but never his freedom. The book receives my highest recommendation.

Plumb Crazy
By Niles Jacobsen
Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Although the story takes place mainly in a mental hospital, its ramifications can be felt in all of the broader society. The struggles depicted in the various characters, both internally and inter-personally, will give the reader pause and perhaps change your perception on life.

The story at its core encompasses the struggle between the individual (portrayed by Randall McMurphy) and the establishment (Portrayed by nurse Ratched.) It is told through the eyes of the schizophrenic half-Indian known as Chief Bromden. Bromden has pretended to be deaf and dumb for so long that everyone takes this fact for granted. It also allows him to overhear comments from the staff that others would not. The Chief is an interesting choice as narrator, and at times it seemed like he was rambling on about nothing. Unreliable narrators can be a touchy thing, but Kesey is able to navigate his way through the Chief's mind, and in time we find his ramblings have a purpose. He views the establishment as a machine, which he refers to as "the combine." He speaks of fog machines, wires in the walls, and robotic people, and views them as part of the combine. Even the name of the nurse, Ratched, sounds almost like "ratchet," which is a common tool. The Chief sees the struggle between the Big Nurse, as he calls Ratched, and McMurphy, and even though he has a sense right away that McMurphy is different, Bromden doesn't hold out much hope. After all, the combine is a massive machine and the Chief knows what it did to him. Bromden tells McMurphy he "used to be big," but not any more. The Chief's mother, a white woman from town, along with the government, broke down both he and his father and became bigger than both of them put together.

The antagonist is Ratched, an ex-army nurse who rules the ward with an iron fist. She preys on the weaknesses of the patients and attacks them in those areas. She is all about control and power, and over her long career has devised many ways of projecting this with a cold, machine-like efficiency. Ratched has hand picked her staff based on their cruelty and submissiveness. The Chief calls her "The Big Nurse," which reminds me of Orwell's Big Brother, and mentions early on that "The Big Nurse tends to get real put out if something keeps her outfit from running like a smooth, accurate, precision-made machine" (pg 24). Indeed the Chief sees her as a machine, part of the combine who's purpose is to make others small. Ratched represents the oppressive nature and de-humanization present in modern society.

And then there is Randle McMurphy. Sent to the ward from a work farm (because it's "easier" time), McMurphy comes in loud and confident. His singing and laughter are something new for the patients so used to suppressing their emotions. And he is definitely not the kind of patient the mechanical and repressive Nurse Ratched wants. It only takes McMurphy one group session to see Ratched's method of exposing the patient's weakest areas and pecking them into submission. Harding, the subject of the group meetings earlier frenzy, explains that it was all therapeutic. McMurphy, however, gives Harding his perception: "what she is is a ball-cutter. I've seen a thousand of 'em...people who try to make you weak so they can get you to...live like they want you to. And the best way to do this...is to weaken you by gettin' you where it hurts the worst" (pg 56). So McMurphy, ever the gambling man, makes a bet with his fellow patients that he would be able to make Ratched lose her composure, and he accomplished this by using her own tactics against her. As he pulls Bromden and the others out of the "fog" and makes them big again, McMurphy unwittingly becomes the savior of his fellow patients. It did not go un-noticed that the electroshock table was cross-shaped with the patient restrained by the wrists and feet and a "crown" placed over his head. When McMurphy rips Nurse Ratched's tightly starched uniform and exposes her breasts, he is symbolically exposing her hypocrisy and breaking the power she had once wielded over the patients. Chief Bromden's final act of mercy cemented Nurse Ratched's fall as well as giving McMurphy the dignity that he had earned.

Perhaps the largest piece of advice I pulled from this novel is to never let anyone or anything take your individuality. Society in general would like to have everyone fit into the same mold because then the people are easier to predict and control. However, we all need a McMurphy in our lives to show us that we can still be individuals and fit into society. And when The Combine tries to weaken you and make you conform, just throw your head back and laugh like McMurphy, "because he knows you have laugh at the things that hurt you just to keep yourself in balance, just to keep the world from running you plumb crazy" (pg 233).

Simply Divine
By Jeffrey Leach
Counterculture icon and author Ken Kesey (1935-2001) wrote his first novel, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," in 1960. The book was a response to the author's experiences testing mind-altering drugs for the federal government and his later tenure as a nurse's aide in the same facility. In the introduction to the novel, Robert Faggen places this seminal novel in its proper context, arguing that this book incorporates several themes of the 1950's: the Cold War, the plight of the Native Americans, the reliance on psychiatry as a cure all for social problems, and the vestigial remnants of McCarthyism. Even if you could care less about how Kesey's book fits into American cultural history, you could hardly fail to miss the overarching theme of his novel: the tensions between the individual and the state, between those trapped in an industrial society and those who wish to live in freedom. There is a film version of this book starring Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher that adequately captures Kesey's stark visions.
The author's tale takes place in a mental asylum at an unknown time. Perhaps this is because time has little importance to the inmates in the facility. The people in this particular ward of the hospital fall into categories of `acute' or `chronic,' depending on whether they have hope of recovery or are irrevocably ill. The days are full of drudgery, an endless round of medications interspersed with playing cards against the background of canned polka music. Everyday the acute patients meet for group therapy that really doubles as a McCarythyesque tattling session. The name of the game is acquiescence to the myriad rules and regulations of the institution. Those inmates who violate the rules earn a trip to the disturbed ward or a quick trip to the electroshock chamber. Repeated disobedience could lead to a lobotomy. Predictably, fear is the perpetual state in which most of the patients live. But with the appearance of a nonconformist named Randle McMurphy, fear starts to give way to a burgeoning hope that life will become better in this hospital.
The narrator of this story is Chief Bromden, a mixed blood Indian who is a patient in the ward. This man spends his days mopping and sweeping the floors while hearing and seeing everything that goes on around him. The Chief fears that something called the `Combine' controls the world. For him, the `Combine' is the machinery that fills the walls and floors of the hospital, constantly spying on and controlling the men in the ward. He believes that those who work in the asylum are actually full of cogs and gears, are part of this giant, controlling machine. Moreover, the staff and the patients believe that Bromden is a deaf mute. He isn't, but Kesey's choice of this Indian as the narrator of unfolding events is a stroke of brilliance. Since no one thinks the Chief can hear or speak, he becomes privy to every activity in the institution. The staff speaks freely around him because they feel they have nothing to worry about. His cleaning duties allow him full access to every area of the floor, including the room where the staff meets to discuss other inmates. You cannot help but like Bromden, and you quickly question whether his observations are truly the ramblings of a madman.
The central figure in Bromden's `Combine' theory is Nurse Ratched, sometimes referred to as `Big Nurse.' This seemingly grandmotherly woman personifies the Chief's fear of control and cold aloofness. Ratched runs the floor from her little glass booth, her hands on the levers of the machinery that controls the lights, the music, the group therapy sessions, and even most of the doctors. Her voice alone controls the destiny of the inmates. Ratched enforces the rules and regulations, and she decides who receives punishment or release. Big Nurse encourages stool pigeons and belittles the patients with implied threats and stony glares, often masked under an ersatz exterior of patience and cheerfulness. With the arrival of McMurphy, Ratched prepares for a battle of wills that by extension is a war between the individual and the state.
Randle McMurphy is a boisterous, tattooed, redheaded troublemaker ducking a sentence on a work farm by acting crazy. Right from the start, McMurphy undermines the rules and regulations of the hospital. He gambles for money, wonders the hall wearing nothing but towels, sings, and challenges Ratched's authority by going to the floor doctor to receive rule waivers. But far, far worse is McMurphy's effect on the other inmates in the institution. His breezy spirit and tenaciousness encourages others to demand changes in the daily routine. Randle is a subversive of the worst type, and Ratched will do anything in her power to slap down this upstart to her fascistic rule. The end of the story seems to mark a significant defeat for the concept of individualism, but if one reads closely it is apparent Kesey keeps the dream of freedom alive however ephemeral it may be.
Although I disagree strongly with Kesey's career as a counterculture mainstay, I loved this book. Everything about it is brilliant, from the characterization to the tight writing style. The Penguin edition even includes pencil sketches of people Kesey drew during his work as a nurse's aide. These haunting sketches add a special dimension to the text. Ultimately, the novel works because of its messages of freedom versus entrapment and the dangers of both conformity and nonconformity to the human soul. I recommend you run, not walk, to get this book.

PreS. A collection of poems about animals and a story about a journey through the jungle to hunt for them. The search begins as a small group of ants marches off from their hill early in the morning. A verse then introduces each creature as encountered, until the end of the day when all of the animals are ready to sleep. As an added bonus, each poem gives a little information about the animal described. A nice rhythm is established and maintained. An occasional line is awkward, but overall the book reads well. The illustrations are equally playful and eye-catching. Done in oils, each one is bright, bold, and inviting, but totters on the brink of being cute. Large, double-page spreads make the animals easily seen from a distance, but children who view the pictures up close will delight in finding some of the ants on each page. An entertaining selection with lively illustrations and a format suitable for storytimes.?Dawn Ibey, Vancouver Public Library, Canada

Bright and fun
By Shopper
This book rhymes and has a catchy rhythm the kids enjoy. The pictures are bold and bright. The simple amount of text allows many natural opportunities for animal sounds and voices. The pages have small details that are also fun. My kids like to find and point out the ants crawling through the pages of the book. Each page is a different poem. There is no cohesive storyline but rather a little silly poem about each animal. Because of the simple rhyming and bright colors my kids were all interested in the book from newborn to now preschool age. Commotion in the Ocean by the same author/illustrator is equally as good. My kids ask for both.

LOVE!!!
By Lacey
My neighbor gave me 2 books by the same author and illustrator (hard cover), Commotion in the Ocean and Baryard Hullbaloo. My girl absolutely LOVES these 2 books especially Commotion in the Ocean. Seeing as she loves these two I wanted to get Rumble in the Jungle, she is only 10 months so I got her a durable board book instead of a hardcore book cause I didnt want the pages to tear. I unwrapped it, showed her the book and she did a "OoOOOO!" face and crawled to me and we sat down and read the book.
Mesmerized. The pages are colorful, the rhymes are fun and tuney. I ADORE these books. Ever time I turned the page she will open up her eyes to take in all the colors and I would watch her eyes dart from side to side to see the pictures. Then would babble something about the picture.. then would want to turn to the next page. I love love LOVE how each page I turn the colors are a little bit different, the scenery is different so there is a nice contrast been the page you are on and to the next. There is also a 'dark' page towards the end of the book where it is night time, she loves this page too (also in the other two books) I truely recommendd this book its amazing. It IS a little short but for a toddler whos attention span is limited its fabulous!

Embarrass your kids, repeat it word for word....
By D
This is truly a great book for little ones, engaging rhyming scheme that catches little minds without having to try too hard. Wonderful visuals that make it easy to look over repeatedly. I read it so many times to my now 17-year old son, I can still repeat the opening sequence, word for word! "There's a rumble in the jungle, there's a whisper in the trees...." I use it now just to embarrass him. Have bought several copies as gifts for nieces and nephews - always a big hit!
